What does rap mean, in this context?

rap, I think, is slang for information.

Besides being awful music, with apologises to the rappers out here.

Mod note

Am editing the title to include Nagaland. A title of 'rap' may get a different audience.

Hope my understanding of 'rap' is correct

I think so. However "a quick way to get the rap needed" would seem more indicative of how do I get a permit quickly (A: I don't know).*

I don't know, running an international board has its quirks, that's for sure.

* As far as I know (but don't hold me on this), you can just indicate when getting your visa what extra permits you might require. These may or may not be granted. And this may or may not mean you'll actually get to pass those state borders when you're there. I hear their issuing as such varies per point (or even day) of applying too.

Alternatively, you can arrange them on the ground with the appropriate ministries (or commissions or departments or whatever they're called, typically in one or any of the metros, I think for the NE Delhi or Kolkata are naturally preferred).

This is about a decade-old information, when I was set to head over there, but I ran out of time. I take it Nagaland has quieted down somewhat (to what is euphemistically known as a "low-key civil war," there's supposed to be cease-fires in place though), but is still far from the easiest states there, so I just don't know. Does OP (the original poster) have personal ties there? Might help.

The NE is much on my wish-list still; what I know is if I ever do go I'll speak to a specialized travel bookstore here who I'm pretty sure will be able to help me & may have some regional guidebooks or at least background reading. I've not seen any latest LP editions btw and for instance, but they and other publishers might conceivably have some more extensive info on the region now that parts of it are more open, back then they just didn't have much on it.

There's nothing wrong with asking your Indian embassy about it.

Other restrictions I thought of later is for some states you'll be restricted to going as a tour group; or you may need a personal invitation.

I don't know what the current deal is for Nagaland, and those stipulations typically change all the time. If you can fill in what your personal links are there, this may make it easier for others to answer. Maybe going there is all hunky-dory these days, I couldn't tell you. I know Assam has been technically OK for the past decade, but tensions have been flaring up all the same for all that time.

Thanks for the explanation. If I knew anything about that part of the world I might have recognised it, as it is I was entirely puzzled.

I think many people might still be, so I'll add the word 'permit' to the thread title. Every little helps (I hope!)...

ps The Nagaland state tourism site seems to be typically down, which has one wondering. There's some permits info at http://www.incredibleindia.org/newsi...asp?pageid=393 , click on to Nagaland there (one never knows how up-to-date that is, but it's a lead); for general background reading I find this not bad http://www.alertnet.org/db/crisispro...tm?v=in_detail , note the affiliated pages there too.

You may already know the region like your back pocket, but just for your information.

Some more portals at http://www.iloveindia.com/directory/Nagaland/index.html , but doesn't seem to add very much in any practical sense.
