Hi guys
I´m having a bit of trouble finding information on the costs and timeperiods for RAP´s for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram... Hope you can help. Have any foreign tourists here arranged any of these permits in India, and could you tell me how long the procedure took and how much it costs? And how and where did you do it? Is it at all possible to just get the permit (without a travelcompany), and then go off on your own? Or perhaps not get the permits and just go anyway? Do the permits get checked a lot?I you have to book a tour through a travelcompany (and be a group of at least four people), could you tell me how much these tours are? And is it at all possible to get permits for Manipur and Mizoram? Sorry for the many questions, but I´m leaving for India (south) soon and am right now trying to work out if I have enough time and money to visit these areas. I hope I do, because they seem like some of the most interesting places in India... Any info will be appriciated! ![]() |

Hi
When we were in Assam and Meghalaya last spring we had also planned to visit one of the national parks in Arunachal Pradesh. I was recommended to contact Oken Tayeng and met up with him in Delhi. Oken was going to arrange our visit including permits, but at the last minute the authorities closed the park as they were carrying out the tiger census. It's not cheap, but I was impressed with Oken and really sorry not to be able to carry out the trip. Here's his details: Abor Country Travels & Expeditions Okeng Tayeng (MD), # 5, ESS Sector. Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh - 791111 Phone : +91 - 360 - 2211722 Mobile : +91-94360-43170 E-mail : aborcountry@rediffmail.com, kentayeng@yahoo.com Website : www.aborcountry.com We did also meet a couple of guys when we were in Nameri NP, who were going into AP alone - to the monastery in East AP, forget the name at the moment. They were just two, but it seems to be fairly common practice to be able to find other names to go on the application form If you're going to Assam, do try and find time for a visit to Kaziranga NP - absolutely amazing. |

A foreign tourist needs permits to visit any north-eastern state. Assma is an excetion but here too some parts are allowed in only when you have permits (e.g. Bodo area, although given its insurgency, I doubt anybody will think of visiting ).
Even most Indians need permits to visit states other then Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya. Best thing is to ask the tour operators, they know 'how to get the permits'. They are not costly, (atleast for Indians), permit to Arunachal costed me Rs.15 and do not take much time (3-4 working days). All permits can be arranged at Delhi/Kolkatta at the states bhawans (eg. Nagaland house, Tripura house etc.) or their state tourist office. |

Last year-2006 --we visited Mizoram. A permit is needed --and officially only a group of 4 can travel. But there are other ways as I found while arranging permits for my friend. If one can have a letter of Invitation from any Missionary organization ( being a predominantly Christian state --there are endess number of missionary organizations there) -- the Mizoram govt permits individual entry also.( it accomodates you automatically in a group of 4 with others). When we were in Aizwal--my friend --who is a nerd --also wanted to visit interior parts. Officially it is forbidden. But when we contacted the govt authorities--they said--they have no problem if we travel there. It is the central govt policy not to permit foreigners in to the interiors. The state govt welcomes all. we visited some interior places --near Aizwal--but it was too late to go to more interiors like Saiha/Lunglei. He is coming in December again-- and is Hell-bent on visiting Tirap/Changlang district there. It is more difficult to get a RAP in AP than Mizoram. If we can't manage Arunahal--we will use our contacts ladt year and enter the most interior places of Mizoram as Saiha seems to have a nice wildlife sanctuary with some rare species and my favorite --angling.
