There are many surnames in the Dimapur region with the spelling 'abung'. If this is the word you are looking for it may have it's root in the Assamese language - many of those Naga languages do. Sorry don't have a translation for you but hope this helps a bit in your search!

might be nagamise

Hi
When English was not medium of language in between Assamese ppl and Naga ppl, they exchanged their words using a mixed language "assamese and naga". It is called nagamese. This is still existed in common ppl in that region.
In which context did they say that word to you , can u remember it? Since u don't understand any of those language the pronunciation and spelling would be different than u remember.

Abung...could it be a name?

The word 'Abung' stands on a paper with a very little bit of information about some-one. I wonder if it could be a surname, or maybe a tribe?

The Abung tribe lives in Indonesia.

Funny you should ask this but apparently, the Abung tribe lives in the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Here is an authoritative account about them :

This much said, there are a number of people from Manipur (mostly Kuki's) who have a surname "Abung". Please note that there is currently a lot of bad blood between the Naga(IM)-mostly Thangkul tribe - and the Kuki tribes...the kuki's allege that the thangkuls have indulged in ethnic cleansing in their bid to attain "Greater Nagaland"...

Hope this helps.

I have heard of surname Abung in Nagaland. Abung is a tribe there (though not a prominent one like Angamis or Aaos). Abungs reside in outer districts of Manipur as well.
Unfortunately don't have more information.

Abung is a surname.

I think you can safely conclude that Abung is a surname. Whether he is Manipuri (Kuki) or whether he is Naga is anyone's guess...
