North East India

We are leaving for India and the Northeast in November after a stay in Calcutta. Our plan is to fly to Tripura and then work our way through Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya and hopefully Arunachal Pradesh, and possibly Mizoram. What States do we need permits for? How difficult are they to obtain? I keep getting conflicting reports.
Many Thanks
Mike

the official word is on the Govt of India travel site -- can't seem to link to the actual page, but from the home page click on 'travel info', then on 'restricted zones'

http://www.tourindia.com/htm/homepage.htm

no personal experience as to difficulty and all that. good luck, sounds interesting.

Entry requirements

Mike1123

As of early this year, when we were last in the North East, there were no restrictions on foreigners entering Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura. I am not sure about Tripura at the moment but Assam and Meghalaya are still OK.

With the other North Eastern states you need a special permit to enter. There are various conditions you have to satisfy before these are issued. If you are a tourist you have to be a member of an organised tour group and in the case of Arunachal you must spend so many dollars per day (quite a lot).

We have been to Assam and Meghalaya twice recently. The first time we crossed the Assam/Meghalaya border we were told to register with the Superintendant of Police (SP) in Shillong, which we did. The second time nobody mentioned this, so we didn't.

We hope to revisit this area in early 2003 so if you find that the situation has changed we would be grateful if you could post on this thread.
