Hi there
I am going from Udaipur to Mumbai to Calcutta at moment by train. Would like to take in a great Nat. Park...didn't have much feedback on Sasan Gir so wondering about Kanha. also would like to see Ellora Caves and (Mt Abu???). would appreciate some help with train / bus connections for these off line sites. If I go to Kanha, shoulkd I book train from station connection after seeing Kanha from Mumbai ....if so how long should I allow for Kanha? thanx for all help cheers |

Go from Udaipur to Abu Road and then a bus to Mt. Abu. Beautiful Dilwara temple should not be missed!
Getting a train to Aurangabad (for Ellora/Ajanta) is a bit more complicated, perhaps... I haven't checked that one out yet, but I'll be going from Hyderabad, which has a direct train.

Also, are you only going to Mumbai for a train connection, there is a (poorly timed) direct train from Abu Road to Jalgaon, (57km north of Ajanta Caves, from there you could move on to Ellora Caves. |

kivik, I see from your other posts that your not fully decided on the route you want to take.
I've heard good things about Sasan Gir, but have not been there myself, from Sasan Gir it is easy to get to Diu, from Diu you can get a plane to Mumbai, the plane departs Diu at 12:15 (not Saturday) and goes via Porbander, getting to Mumbai at 15:00.(US$ 100 single) There are 2 convenient Daily overnight trains from Abu Road to Bandra (Mumbai). Train 9008 departs Abu Rd at 17:20 and gets to Bandra at 07:00 Train 4707 departs Abu Rd at 20:30 and gets to Bandra at 11:30 The route you have suggested in this thread is quite complex to work out, at a first glance, I think I can work out a good route all the way to Calcutta. But that would take at least an hour to work out the right trains and type the post, I don't mind doing it (I quite enjoy it), but you need to work out what route you are going to take to Mumbai first (if your going there). |

oops sorry...was a bit obscure.
I plan on staying in Mumbai for a few days before train to Calcutta but somehow want to fit in Ellora and Kanha. Womanusa has got me on the bus to Mt Abu from Udaipur then I guess train down to Mumbai or rather than straight to Mumbai doing Ellora on way down to Mumbai. haven't worked out how to do this yet Do I catch a train then from Mumbai to Calcutta and stopoff at ??? connection down to Kanha? (i.e. if it is even off this line) The confusion was that I am thinking of the difficulty of getting a train the day u book, so the queries were to book prior in Mumbai to recatch the train after seeing Kanha. (and therefore how many days to allow for Kanha. hope easier and again thanx |

If you go to Sasan Gir and Diu (Diu is worth at least a few days in itself) then Mumbai, then the best route would be to go to Aurangabad (for Ellora) then on to Ajanta then up to Jalgaon for a Calcutta boung train.
Would you still want to go to Kanha?

Kanha should be closed until November 1st, Bandhavgarh certainly is. You could ask your travel agent to find out.

yeah, Kanha and Bandavgar are on my A list too, so let us know how it was for ya!
you can definitely hit Aurangabad (the base for Ellora, Daulatabad and Ajanta) on the way from Rajasthan. The main trunk line from delhi thru RJ goes to Manmad. that's where you get down and scoot over to Aurangabad. Might be a better way from the more savvy spotters here- or when you get to India you can get it sorted out.

First, Mumbai to Ellora Caves (26km from Aurangabad).
Train 7616…Mumbai CST 06:10, Aurangabad 13:30.-- CC, SL. Train 1003…Mumbai CST 21:05, Aurangabad 04:40.-- 2A, 3A, SL. 2A = Rs 731 3A = Rs 471 CC = Rs 369 SL = Rs 178 There are regular bus services from Ellora to Fardapur (5 km from Ajanta Caves, journey time 3 hours). Also from Fardapur, there are regular buses to Jalgaon (1.5 hours) for your onward journey towards Calcutta. ______________________________ _______________ There are 2 routes you can take to get to Kanha National park, either via Gondia or via Jabalpur. There is a well timed overnight train to Gondia: - Train 8033…Jalgaon 21:40, Gondia 08:35. 2A = Rs 993 3A = Rs 640 SL = Rs 238 The only well timed trains to Jabalpur dont stop at Jalgaon, the nearest place they stop is Bhusaval (25 km from Jalgaon), there are regular trains and buses from Jalgaon to Bhusaval, check for a direct bus from Fardapur or Ajanta, a Taxi is always an option. Train 1093…Bhusaval 07:45, Jabalpur 16:25. Train ****..Bhusaval 20:20, Jabalpur 04:30.(only 4 days a week) (Train No. 5026 on Sa, Su, Tu, and 5130 on Th) 2A = Rs 993 3A = Rs 640 SL = Rs 238 ______________________________ _______________ There are direct buses from Jabalpur to the Kanha National park entrance at Kisli at 08:00 + 11:00, they take at least 6 hours along a poor road. (173 km) A good alternative is a narrow gauge train from either Jabalpur or Gondia to Nainpur, (an equal distance from both), below are the times of trains to/from both. --------------Nainpur 00:35, Jabalpur 05:45. (II.) Gondia 06:20, Nainpur 11:15. (II) Gondia 10:30, Nainpur 15:45, Jabalpur 20:45. (FC, II.) Gondia 14:15, Nainpur 18:00, Jabalpur 22:10. (FC, II.) --------------Nainpur 07:55, Jabalpur 13:20. (II) --------------Nainpur 12:00, Jabalpur 17:00. (II.) Jabalpur 23:30, Nainpur 04:30. (FC, II.) ---------------Nainpur 05:00, Gondia 09:30. (II) Jabalpur 05:00, Nainpur 09:10, Gondia 12:55. (FC, II.) Jabalpur 06:50, Nainpur 11:55, Gondia 17:15. (FC, II.) Jabalpur 11:40, Nainpur 17:05. (II) Jabalpur 13:40, Nainpur 19:30. (II) ---------------Nainpur 18:15, Gondia 22:45. (II) Jabalpur 19:25, Nainpur 00:20, Gondia 04:30. (FC, II.) Fares for Gondia – Nainpur – FC = Rs 183, II = Rs 22 Fares for Jabalpur – Nainpur – FC = Rs 179, II = Rs 21 ______________________________ ________________ Nainpur is 19 km from Chiraidongri, the buses from Jabalpur pass through here before the approach to the National Park, from Chiraidongri to Kisli is about 30 km (estimate), it should be possible to take a taxi or bus from Nainpur and/or Chiraidongri to the park entrance at Kisli. The following trains may be of use, they only have second class (II) though it is only a short journey. (Rs 16) Nainpur 07:00, Chiraidongri 07:43. Nainpur 11:20, Chiraidongri 12:43. Nainpur 16:55, Chiraidongri 17:58. Chiraidongri 10:20, Nainpur 11:40. Chiraidongri 15:55, Nainpur 17:10. Chiraidongri 20:40, Nainpur 21:55. ______________________________ _________________ To get to Howrah (Calcutta) you can go from either Gondia or Jabalpur. Train 2809…Gondia 13:15, Howrah 06:30. -- 1A, 2A, 3A, SL. Train 2859…Gondia 21:47, Howrah 14:15. -- 2A, 3A, SL. 1A = Rs 2848 2A = Rs 1505 3A = Rs 971 SL = Rs 365 Train 2322…Jabalpur 13:50, Howrah 11:25. -- 1A, 2A, 3A, SL. 1A = Rs 3093 2A = Rs 1631 3A = Rs 1050 SL = Rs 393 ______________________________ __________________ Varanasi wasn’t on your list, but I noticed a couple of well timed overnight trains from Jabalpur, they are not daily trains. Train 2165…Jabalpur 21:30, Varanasi 08:10. (M, Th, Sa) Train 9045…Jabalpur 23:05, Varanasi 09:30. (M, W, Th, F, Su) 2A = Rs 976 (9045 Rs 946) 3A = Rs 641 (9045 Rs 611) SL = Rs 247 (9045 Rs 227) ______________________________ ___________________ All trains except Jabalpur/Gondia – Nainpur and Nainpur – Chiraidongri should be booked as far ahead as possible. There may be a problem between Gondia and Balaghat (41 km north of Gondia), It may be closed for gauge conversion.
My times for that section were based on last year’s timetables; I have since noticed that one of the trains in 'Trains at a Glance' only goes south as far as Balaghat. I have sent a question of to the Indian Railways Fan Club Association (IRFCA) to see if anyone can tell me if the whole line is still operational. As soon as I get a reply, I will post the info here. I can't find a telephone number for information, perhaps you could try in India, you would need to get the telephone number for either the maintenance department or the or the timetabling department of Southeast Central Railways (Raipur division). It may be easier to get the telephone number of the station manager of either Gondia or Balaghat stations. Last edited by steven_ber : Oct 22nd, 2003 at 20:14. |
