mizoram
Hi Indophiles!
I am an American who lived in Chennai for two years studying a master's degree at the time, I made a good friend from Mizoram. This is a state in North east India. Usually foreigners need a special permit to go here. It is mostly tribals, and the culture is totally different from the rest of India. Either they are animist or Christians. Most are Christians. There are not many Hindus in this state, and mostly their traditional dress is like a wrap around skirt and a tight long sleeved top. They speak a language called Mizo, which only got a script in 1900s from christian missionaries, so though their langauge may be more chinese than indian (hindi or any other) their script is in western letters. Most of the city girls wear western dresses, tight jeans and tops. They do not have arranged marriages there, the girls date, drink and smoke like any western girls. Though I was in India two years, I never had a chance to go there. Has anyone went there and can you tell us about it? Their capital is Aizwal. here is my homepage addy if you like to see http://members.tripod.com/~jennifer_polan/ |

Actually Jennifer I am visiting there in April (I wonder how you put up with the accent though, probably the most difficult to understand among Indian accents in English), will keep you posted.

Hi. You are going to Mizoram in April!? Please let us know about your trip. Actually my friends from Mizoram were studying in Chennai and their accent was OK, but they are very educated.
