I'm an Indian national and I went there a few years ago. Just to add to the exhaustive compendium above:

- Try contacting a local guide. Mizoram is very new to tourism (hence its charm) so you might need help.

- I stayed at the government guest houses in the city and it was fantastic value. Book in advance.. i think there are two in the capital city and our first choice was booked out.

- You'll need to hire a car for most days since most of the 'sights' are a fair distance away. But i found the overall scenery and way of life to be main attractions.

- You need to be open minded about food - there aren't too many options. They use a lot of pork, and dinners are served at 6pm. Personally, I enjoyed it a lot but I can see a few people put off by the lack of choice.

I took the erstwhile Air Deccan (now KF Red) from Kolkata and stayed there for just 2 days. I'd like to take a more leisurely trip the next time I'm there.

- Mizoram is free from internal strife so it's all safe. I had cellphone coverage in most areas.

- It's a 'dry state', ie no alcohol is sold there. So the best gift you can take with you is a bottle of vodka, or whiskey .
