Majuli, Assam.
Just been re-watching Michael Palin's 'Himalaya' series again, Majuli looks like a real haven, peaceful retreat.
Anybody been there? Is it possible to stay at the 'Satras'? Been reading up on it, really seems like my kind of place..... |

Hi: I spent a week on Majuli at a guesthouse at a satra near the village of Kamalabari. This was the winter before last. For 175 rupees a day I got a room, meals with the monks if I liked and a free bike to use.It was pretty asic.My shower consisted of a room with a big old farm pump that you filled a bucket with. The monk that looked after the guests was the guy who tries to show Michael Palin how to play the drum in the film. He's quite an interesting man and an out and out character. He cooked me dinner every night in his room.A number of the satva's have rooms for guests. You could spend a fair amount of time going from satva to satva hanging out. Each one seems to have some particular thing they specialize in.The one at Kamalabari acted out scenes from the life of Krishna in full costume while another one specialized in making large masks.A fellow(named danny I believe)rents out a very nice bamboo bungalow.I only saw three other tourists during my time there. There is nothing above basic accomodation on the island. You take ferry's to get on and off the island.I came from the Jorhat side and left by the other side near North Lahkimpur. think Assam in general and Majuli in particular was the highlight of my last trip to India.

This is the kind of place I'm also looking for in India because after so many trips there it seems that nice and exciting places are already exhausted and I should move elsewhere in southeast Asia (I still have a pending subject in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh).

Need info on Majuli..?? Buzz me
Hi Guys..
I am a guy who has spend his childhood visiting Majuli at least once every year.. (both of my parents were born there.. so went there every year to visit my grand parents). Even though right now I am around 2000 kms away from Majuli, just let me know if I could be of any help to anyone.. I hope that everyone know that "Majuli is World's Largest River Island". |
