Kalimpong / Darjeeling / Pelling
hello all
The wife and me are planning a trip to Kalimpong and Sikkim/Darjeeling for a week or so. The intention is to just relax and do absolutely nothing else!! If anybody is these now or in the recent past, I would really like to know what the weather is like out there. Any opinions on Kalimpong? Is it worth going to? Also, if any body intends to travel there in the next 3/4 days, maybe we could share a taxi from New Jalpaiguri/ Siliguri. You can contact me via PM. Thanks Shan |

We were in this area about four weeks ago. Darjeeling is certainly worth it as the views of Kanchenjunga are wonderful this time of year. We stayed at the Aliment Guesthouse which is very good and quiet. About Rs 250/300. Good restaurant with great views.
Sikkim is very spread out in terms of places to see. Gangtok is a typical Indian town. We enjoyed Rumtek and stayed at the Sungay (not Sangay) near the monastery Rs. 200, small menu and slow but good food-order ahead. Good place to veg out around the monastery - some good walks. Pelling - good views again (but weather closed in while we were there due to cyclone in Bay of Bengal) The trek around to Kheochaperi Lake, Yuksom etc is a work of fiction. The Lake is ok for a day trip (think pond) but there's no where to stay that's worth even considering. Pelling itself is a sprawl of guesthouses and tour shops. The monastery is worth visiting and there are a few walks. If I went again I'd concentrate on Darjeeling more - good treks and decent places to stay and visit. Arrived in Kalimpong in rain and that's how it stayed for a couple of days. However, I didin't really rate the place much. Seemed a depressed a seedier version of Darjeeling. Hope this helps |

Darjeeling is one of my favourite places in the entire world - let alone India. Kalimpong was a bit of a waste of time though.

Nothing further to add on Darjeeling/Sikkim, but I enjoyed Kalimpong - nothing to do, but a nice place to chill for a day or two. From NJP/Siliguri don't get a taxi, get a shared jeep, they run like buses in this part of the world. About Rs100 to Darjeeling from NJP/Siliguri (about two and a half hours) and from Darjeeling you can get shared jeeps to Gangtok, Pelling, and Kalimpong.
