Jharkhand
I dont know why I am doing this (maybe it has something to do with the fact that I was born there) but I have been advertising Jharkhand at the TT and now I am doing it here. For all you discerning travellers..GO to Jharkhand, and explore the mild hills, valleys and riverbeds. I spent 17 years there and never tired of the endless opportunities for exploration. Amazing people outside the cities (cities..are well..just like cities..), milky local brew called handia.., Sal Forests, Project Tiger at Betla...and ooh ooh.. the Kechki river confluence near Betla.. ,then Netarhat, Amjhoria, Horhap.. hell.. you just need to get out a map and go anywhere. Of course.. tourist facilities are minimal everywhere. Hardly a tourist destination.. but if you know people there who are free to show you around, and they offer to show you around, take them up on their offer..you won't regret it. Or maybe you can get there and rough it out. Even that isnt so hard, especially since the weather in that area is excellent except in peak summers and monsoon. And if anyone..anyone at all..finds Jacinta falls in the hills between Ramgarh and Ranchi (try looking after the monsoon, till march, after that it dries up), you will have found one of the most amazing, romantic places in Jharkhand. A Quiet bubbling waterfall, very safe , not too much water, some great rockclimbing around it, the water is clean enough to drink and if water can taste heavely..this is where its at. But I am not telling you where it is. Find it. Half the fun is in discovering it. It isnt so difficult to find, really. If you ever get to that region, ask around..and no..I am not sending you off into a wild goose chase. Okay, enough advertisment already. Apart from Jacinta falls, if anyone wants any information about that area, feel free to ask me.

well ankur that is nice , even i did not envisage jharkhand as a place where romantic interludes and waterfalls are possible. i always think of it as singhbhum region full of mines. of course ranchi does have a flying club and jamshedpur telco and tisco. do i sound like an ignorant and patronizing foreigner ?
well i am making use of this thoughtful thread of yours to highlight another region that is undiscovered and a pleasure for the traveller. konkan region of maharashtra - actually it is the west coast of maharashtra , south of bombay. the place where enron set up its coastal power plant that was a rogue deal. india's most magnificient sea forts viz sindhudurg and alibag are here. the countryside is green , there are undiscovered beaches and beaches with minimum people. harihareshwar and anjanvel the port come to mind now. tourist facilities are minimal , but then travelling is pure and the numerous mountains , ghats, waterfalls, the nature and the wide undisturbed coastline make it a heaven for anyone with a desire for natural beauty. travel further south to gokarna and then goa. but if you really do konkan you will not trave further south. |

Oh, yes, the mines and minerals are aplenty but so are the beautiful things. And I have heard lots of good things about the Konkan coast but have travelled very little there. Once of these days I am going to take some time off and explore that area, starting just north of Goa and will make my way north along the coast, crisscrossing in the the western ghats from time to time. I am going to get all my information from you, when I do. I have heard about some sea forts which are just off the coast, on little islands. I saw an article about that in an in flight magazine in a Jet Airways flight but I dont remeber much of it. Do you know about these?
