Is assam dangerous??
Hi,
Would Assam be too dangerous to travel to say Guwahati or Kaziranga even though it is not at a magnitude of the Kashmir Valley? Would you advise it or not..? Thanks Rahul |

That still doesn't answer his question.
KAziranga is not terrorist/seperatist dangerous.BAckpacking through assam is fraught with peril. the roads are not as well as could be, it's constantly rainy(depending on when you go) , there are many problems doing trails and treks(from gurellas to wildlife) and tourism is not as organized in assam as in say Himachal pradesh. but the bright side for you is that, as a non resident indian, you will not be subject to foreigner restrictions or to get special permission to be in many places in assam(the Indian army operates the more remote roads in assam , so as such driving to many places will require contact with the army authorities. but kaziranga nad guahati (and shillong and tawang AP ) are fun. try to catch the railway along the brahmaputra river, if it's working when you go. |

By may/june I assume you mean 2007 (at the earliest). I would vote assam.
while sikkim is beautiful and buddhist and mountainous and colonial, assam is the place that bears research and a well planned adventure. you have plenty of time to work out the river cruises, the hikes and the driving trips ..plus if you make it a long enough trip(I regrettably didn;'t) you can not only visit some of the other wildlife parks in assam(there are four I think) you can also visit tripura and arunachal prades... |

Thank you
and which would you recommend if we do not plan on doing any 'adventures' like rafting or whatever but just enjoy scenery, people, and see attractions like Kaziranga would be, or temples/monasteries, etc.? |

LOL is this about me?
![]() I've been to assam, manipur and tawang in AP.(I'm certainly going back to the northeast of india...and maybe doing burma and cambodia (if I can find a way, soon).) I guess, if you're just looking to restful tourism, a package for kaziranga/guahati/shillong is what you want to do. |

Oh ok.
so did you go by yourself or with some package/tour? How many days do you think is the minimum possible to do Kaziranga/Guwahati? Thanks for all the help! |

I oorganized my trips and permissions ex calcutta. Didn't travel with a packaged tour company(mostly because I was on a working visit to assam/tawang) although there are plenty of kaziranga tour oerators available if you search on the net.

Oh ok. How did you go there? Plane, bus, train, or..?
Would train be safe...they often have a lot of violence on the ones coming from other parts of India to the northeast too dont they..? Like hindi-speaking people being assaulted... |
