Hi guys,
I was going through some website when I saw few pics mentioning that they were of Tawang, Assam, India. Ever since I am unable to concentrate my mind on anything. I am willing to go there and spent some time there. Can anyone suggest me how to reach Tawang? Though I am a budget kind of traveller I would shell out extra money for Flight/Chopper if needed? What all should be done while in Tawang? Is it possible to go there by Bike? Does anyone give bike like Pulsar on rent? Please help me outttttttttttttttttttttttttttt ttttttt. ![]() |

Hi lehlover,
Tawang is not in Assam (it was before 1962 I believe), it is in Arunachal Pradesh. The best route by my experience is - 1) Reach Guwahati by a train or flight. 2) Take bus to Tezpur (good quality buses ply all through day). Takes around 6 hours. 3) Take a state transport bus from Tezpur to Tawang. Takes around 6-7 hours depending on road. or Take a shared maxi cab (generally Tata sumo) to Tawang or If you are in group, hire a maxi cab for yourself (best bet). Do not indulge in night travel as roads in some part are not safe, mudslides are possible. You will find only the army trucks travelling in night and in case of emergency not help is possible. Not all buses go directly to Tawang, some go only upto Bomdila. If you take my words, one must spend atleast one day in Bomdila as well. It is a very nice place with hot water springs and good waterfalls. It also gives you a well deserved break from travelling. Tawang is good and has many hotels. All are budget class so don't worry. Only local taxis are allowed to take tourists for sight-seeing. They have fixed rates. Try to take local hill drivers for two good reasons- they know the area much better and they are more honest. Happy travelling. |

Hi there
I would like to visit Tawang early February 2008. Is the place accessible then? And do I need a special permit to visit Tawang? I am not an Indian citizen. Many thanks for your info! |

I would definitely like some company. I will be going around the 20th of this month.
But Im not sure if I will be able to share the cost of the permits. Im a citizen of India. Most of the time, there are different rules for Indians and Foreigners. I would very much like to go to Nagaland too. Cheers, Harsha |

Back from Tawang
Hey guys..just been back from Tawang. Had a lifetime experience.
Got a SUMO from the SUMO STAND at Tezpur for a lump sum of Rs 5500 for a 4 day trip (includes driver charges). But fuel expenses were extra. Total diesel consumed was 140 litres. I paid for the same as and when required. But do keep your vehicle filled, as there is no guarantee of getting the same from Indian Oil/ reliance Deopts. The roadside shacks (eateries) stock diesel. You can get ur vehicle filled-up here. At the end of the trip about 10-15 litres were left. But one cannot help it and the same had to be forsaken. The fuel consumption was around 6-7 kms per litre of diesel. (Steep ascents) We hired the SUMO from:- Mr Dipak Kataki (Sumo owner)(Registered with ASTC- Assam State Transport Corporation) Phone number- +91-9864182449, +91-9435080318, +91-9435381326 |
