Hindu wedding
Next month i will be travelling to India for my friends wedding in Assam. I will probably be the only non-Indian person at the wedding and my friend (groom) has told me that i will be performing the role of 'best friend' to him, that i will be sitting next to him and such. He didnt say to much more and it was too early in the morning when he rang and told me for me to get all the details. Is this something like being groomsman at a usual Irish/English wedding?? Will i have to come up with a speech?? Will there be alcohol available at this wedding??

The usual practice in Assam is
a) as the best man you're not supposed to eat that day. b) as a sign of good luck, you're supposed to sacrifice a cock and throw the body in the fire. Though a knife is allowed, custom is with the bare hands, you're supposed to cut off it's neck c) ply the bride's family with booze but not partake There are a couple of others but the rest of the IM folk who are knowledgeable will help shortly.

How traditional is this wedding? If it's very traditional, the alcohol is limited to the sangeeth, the party for both families before the ceremony (or rather the collection of ceremonies which could go on for a few days). The religious rites may happen before dawn, and they'll be food but no booze.
But don't ask us, ask your friend. It's his wedding. What do we know? Just show up and be a good bloke--such is the role of best men the world over. |

I am about to marry an Indian and as adventurous as I am I don't want to deal with weird relatives and/or weird practices (like touching husband's feet in the morning) .Last edited by machadinha : Mar 15th, 2007 at 12:37. Reason: fixed quote |

Butthead, you won't have to do much more than wear clothes given to you and sit next to the bridegroom. You may want to practise sitting cross legged for hours (many of the wedding require the participants to sit on the ground). While booze is not part of the main ceremony, it may be offered during the reception. However, there is usually booze drinking on the sly by small groups of men. You just have to sniff them out.

DD are you from assam???? Don't scare with your false statemets
Quote:
I don't know how DD came with such a comment.. There are many tribes in ASSAM and may be of this kind of practice. But as usual hindu wedding, all three above things are false.. i assure you. If your friend is an assamese and peform ritual as assaemse wedding, you will be his "Dora Dhora". You will get more attention from the women in the crowd then the groom( if you are unmarried ). You need to sit along with the groom while rituals are done( no no sacrifice a cock!!). You will get a nice present from the bride for your designation and you will get a much more love and special status from the newly wedded family for the LIFE time for this job.In assam your job is viewed as very respectful and you draw much attention to the crowd. And for drinking, you can though not openly and u must behave well all the time. Need not to worry. And for DD please refrain from such hoax.... Regards Travel_hungry From Assam |

Like I said... DD has a sense of humour
![]() ....But like all the best 'jokes' of this kind, we are left just a little worried: could it be true? I mean... I've read about horses being sacrificed for special events ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... several thousand years ago. In Ramayana ![]() |
