Gaya - late arrival and hotels
Hi All,
I am coming to Gaya (Bihar) at 1 am in the night - a bit worried as it is Bihar, middle of night and I want to feel safe. Will hotels near the train station be open 24 hrs for check-in? Any suggestions on particular hotels? Many thanks sky |

I am planning to stay in one of hotels close to railway station: LP recommends Ajatsatru, Surya and Siddhartha Int as priced above Rs 500.

I am from Bihar (born and raised). My suggestion to you is that Gaya is not a good place (especially that time of the night and particularly if you are a girl or a foreigner). So have someone from a hotel pick you up (or maybe YMCA or some buddhist organizations you might find there). I wouldn't even consider a cab company (don't know if they have any). Bodh Gaya should be okay though. I am not trying to scare you off, just giving you some heads-up.

Thank you, sshekhar. I will be with my husband, thus I still have concerns about our safety
![]() Will it be safe just to hop off the train in Gaya and walk 200 meters till 3-4 hotels located near the station? I am thinking to stay at 3-stars Siddhartha Int. hotel but cannot find their email in the net to book a room and arrange a pick up. Do you suggest I should call them in advance? Or would you suggest to book a hotel in Bodhgaya and arrange hotel pick up from Gaya train station and that hotel taxi takes us in the night to Bodhgaya? Which is the best option? Thank you for your advice!!! sky |

Sky,
I didn't mean to scare you there. Just to let you know that anywhere in India is very safe for foreigners (as the Indian govt comes down pretty hard on people who mess with foreigners). So that's the good part. That said, Bihar is a very lawless state so incidents like camera snatching and stuff could happen in Gaya. So all I meant to say was try not to be at the wrong place at wrong time. A cab arranged by the hotel is very trustworthy and that's about it. So call Hotel Siddharth and ask them to pick you up from the train station. Leave for Bodh Gaya the next day or so. Having said all that. You will love every bit of your stay there. Try to see Nalanda and Rajgir (its supposedly the world's first university even though western historians don't want to admit it). You will get to see past 2500 years of history and its simply awe-inspiring. |

Thank you, ddutta and sshekhar for info and advice.
I have arranged a booking + pick up from the station in Sujata hotel in Bodhgaya. So I think it is even better ![]() sshekhar, I have found no info re Nalanda and Rajgir in LP. Is t in Bodhgaya or nearby? |

Thanks to everyone, I am back from my trip and I want to say that Bodhgaya is the most amazing place I have seen so far in India!!! I was so scared by all these sayings re dangers in Bihar, that I was trying to skip Gaya & Bodhgaya and change train tickets when I arrived to Delhi. But I failed (no tickets were available), God thanks! My train from Varanasi was very late (for 5 hours) so I arrived to Gaya on sunrise (6 am or so), in daylight, the road from Gaya to Bodhgaya was very beautyful and picturesque, and I felt as safe there as anywhere in India. Great place Bodhgaya, do not miss it and do not be scared by Bihar!!!
