Crossing the Bramaputra in Upper Assam?

I will be in Assam in March, I will go to Guwahati, then will spend
a night in the Rangapara North area, then onto Murkong Selek.

I will try to cross the Barmaputra River and get to the Digboi/Ledo
area.

Anyone have any advice about crossing the river from Murkong Selek? (Should I take my swimming trunks. )

Will I be able to get to Paglum to cross by ferry to Saikhowa, or
will I have to go back to Sisibargaon/Dhemaji and go from there
towards Dibrugarh?

Does anyone know the times of the ferries?

Also, do I need to check in at local police stations/outposts in
towns if I intend to stay overnight?

If so, what does this involve?

Thanks.

I can't help much on this Steve, as it sounds like you are going where no IM'er has gone before!

We have only been as far east as Sibsagar and the only ferry we have taken was to Majuli Island and back.

On our two visits to Assam nobody mentioned having to report to police stations so we didn't and had no problems. I don't know if you're going to Meghalaya but the first time we crossed the Assam-Meghalaya border we were told to report to the District Superintendent of Police in Shillong, which we did. The second time nobody mentioned this so we didn't.

As you are going to be the object of some curiousity in Upper Assam though, it might be worth paying a social visit to local police stations.

Steven,
never been that far north/east .

I've been reading Mark Shand's book 'River Dog '(A journey down the brahmaputra), but i'll guess you read it already .

Some places you mention, are in the book, and there's some info on reporting to local army/police at different places.

Have a nice trip !
