I going to be in Madurai early March and have already booked a train ticket to Kochi just to make sure I get a reserved seat. Hoever I don't really fancy a 12 hour overnight trip and have been wondering about the cost of "Car and driver"

I read so many different postings on various sites many of which seem contradctory. As I,m travelling alone it will invariably even by Indian standards be expensive but costs seem to vary enourmously from R/s 4500 to almost R/s 6500.I,m also told it will take almost as long as the train: Between 9-10 hours.

Has anyone done this trip before and what experiences did you have either on the overnight train or hiring car and driver

What type of train ticket have you reserved? There is every chance that the drive might take as long as the train and there is every chance that your driver either can't or won't chat with you. Overnight trains are nothing to worry about at all and can be a lot of fun... Certainly more social, interesting, entertaining and infinitely cheaper than a long car journey with someone you don't know!
I've know idea how much it would cost but I would probably say you're quoted figures are perhaps a little ambitious.. It could well be a lot more.
