Bodhgaya
Dear all
Have anybody been to Bodhgaya recently? I plan to be there around middle of march 08 and I would love to stay at a monastery (if this matters, I am a female). I am looking for a quiet, peaceful place to stay a couple of days. Any recommendations? Please describe the place, rates and how I can get there. Many thanks in advance for your help Shiva |

In October we stayed at the Roots of Wisdom Institute on the outskirts of Bodhgaya, which is not that far from the Mahabodhi Temple. At Roots Institute, there are some resident Buddhist nuns and monks and many westerners present for short residential courses on Buddhism. And some people like ourselves who were simply visiting Bodhgaya. People in the latter category are expected, like everyone else there, to observe basic Buddhist moral precepts while on the premises. You can attend communal meals, which makes it quite a sociable place. English is the everyday language. You can join in the short morning meditation sessions and attend some talks, if you like, which we did. There is a big shady garden where you can sit around. We were very happy to stay there and would do so again. From memory, I think the community is quite predominantly female. Bihar safety-wise, there is a 24 hour staffed police post immediately outside the gate of the walled compound. In October prices were 750 rupees per night for a double room with own shower and 500 rupees for a single room with own shower. Get more details plus contact e-mail from: www.rootinstitute.com

I recommend the Bhutan monastery, extremely quiet in Bodhgaya itself (street name: Buddhamarg), at the side of Japanese monastery where you can go for meditation morning and evening if you like. Last year rooms were 250 Rs. They are located in a beautiful garden.
Advantage of this to the Root Institute is: the place is in walking distance to the Mahabodhi temple where the Buddha gained Awakening, and to other places as well. |

Root Institute is also within walking distance from the Mahabodhi Temple. We walked this journey regularly.
But it's certainly not as close as the Bhutanese Monastery. And when we were hailed by a cycle rickshaw on our way from Root Institute to Mahabodhi Temple, we tended to climb aboard - especially in hot sunshine. The Bhutanese Monastery buildings are in lovely traditional architecture. It's temple building has a fabulous interior - I think the most beautiful interior of any of the Bodhgaya temples. |
