Bihar Tourism???

Hey all,

I have to go to Patna next week, and once I am free from there, I will have about 5 days before I need to show my face in Calcutta. So at first, I was thinking that I would make some stops along the journey and check out a state that I have always neglected in my travels...but then I realized, I have no idea where I might stop or what I might do. The state is huge, but what options are there for the adventurous tourist with a few days to spend? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Daniel.

i assume by now you can negotiate the toughest of situations one may face in india. if so, then here are a few options in bihar you may try - gaya, bodh gaya, nalanda, vikramshila. google could tell you of more sites.

On your way to Calcutta you can visit Malda for Gaur, Pandua and Adine at the border of Bangladesh then go south to Murshidabad and the last visit I recommend you is Bishnupur 140 km northwest of Calcutta. In my opinion all this places are much more interesting and safer than those in Bihar with the exception of Bodhigaya.

I haven't been to Bihar but plan to go in October. I found a few good sites I can pass on:

Here is a link with the major Bihar spots covered: http://discoverbihar.bih.nic.in/pages/destination.htm

Also of note, there is a Ramayana Circuit to travel there http://discoverbihar.bih.nic.in/page...an_circuit.htm as well as the better known Buddist and Hindu pilgrimage sites.

If you ever saw the movie "Passage to India" the Barabar Caves near Gaya might be of interest. http://www.mapability.com/travel/p2i/barabar.html

Good travels!
