Assam Questions
We are planning on spending 7 days in and around Assam (including the day we fly into Guwahati and the day we fly out). Does anyone have suggestions of what to do in that time?
Also, does anyone know if there are currently insurgents in Assam? Is it safe to travel there? Thanks for your help! |

There are lot to see in Assam. But in 7 days Kaziranga will be good. You can visit Shillong too. It is 3hrs by road . From shillong you can visit Cherapunji, mousingram too. (a day trip ).Dont panic , just enjoy the beauty of NE. Though there is some problem in NE but nothing to worry.Go ahead.

Disturbances do exist - but your chances of getting caught in them are negligible.
Especially now, after the levels and locations have sharply reduced. About your options, it actually depends very much on your interests. Here's a sample schedule Day 1 - Guwahati itself visiting Sualkuchi - handloom centre, WW-II cemetry, Boat ride on Brahmaputra river, have an Assamese dinner Day 2 - Leave for Shillong in adjoining state of Meghalaya. 1.5 day in and around Shillong Day 3 - Reach Kaziranga late night straight from Shillong. Day 4 - 1 day at Kaziranga, Day 5 - Try to tie up to spend 1 day at a tea estate between Kaziranga and Jorhat Day 6 - In Jorhat - visit Majuli island in the Brahmaputra river, plus local spots Day 7 - Return to Guwahati previous late night, see Kamakhya and Nabagraha - Temples plus shop for handicrafts en route to the airport Hope this helps

Assam is experiencing various problems at the moment - there is a lot of tension between the native Assamese and migrants from other states, especially from Bihar and illegal infiltration from Bangladesh. Also ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) is still active in some areas, including I think, the Manas National Park. I doubt very much that you will be able to visit there. However, these are internal matters and foreign tourists are warmly welcomed.
Unless you are specifically interested in wildlife then a side trip to Shillong in Meghalaya would be interesting. You could take the road from Guwahati by bus or taxi which goes through tropical jungles to forests of Khasi pines or if pushed for time, the helicopter service. The local tourist board in Shillong also does an excellent day sightseeing trip to places of interest which takes you to the edge of the Khasi hills overlooking Bangladesh. At Kaziranga I would recommend Wildgrass Resort (see my previous posts on Assam and the hotels section on the froum) who have their office in Guwahati. They can arrange trips into the park and to other places in Assam. |
