Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by bicycle
Hello
We are planning to go to Assam and Arunachal Pradesh for 3 weeks in December. We'll hire a car (minibus)in Guwahati and also take our bicycles. This is our plan: -to Tawang via Doimara and Dirang Dzong -back from Tawang via the smaller road via Yengil and Seijusa . -then via North Lakhimpur to Ziro - Hachi - up to Yarda and back to Hachi- Daparijo - Meshing where we go north to Yiyu - Gasheng -up to Miging and Migo where we go back south via the other side of the river Dihang ( Siang ) to Pangin and Pasighat. With the recent landslides the trip to Tawang seems to have become impossible... What do you think? We want to book a domestic flight from Delhi to Guwahati, but need to take our bicyles. Do Kingfisher or Indigo take those? (can't find any info on their websites). How long is the drive from Jorghat to Guwahati? If it is too long, we might consider flying back to Delhi from Jorghat (instead of Guwahati). Or how long does the ferry take? Another important question: Are the roads described above quiet enough to go by bicycle? Will we be having problems finding bottled water; places to stay? Thanks for your help! greetz Ina |

Hello Ina and welcome to indiamike.com
Sounds like an interesting trip. You need some kind of permit to enter Arunachal Pradesh. |

A cyclist from Bangalore cycled all over North East last year. You can check his blog over here http://www.shreekumar.in/content/north-east/ . I guess it would be helpful to you as you could also get in touch with him for more details.

The landslide had taken place on 27th Oct. By the time you go in December, the roads should be open. Because we were stuck in Tawang because of landslide. But some part of the road was made open by 6th or 7th Nov. Mineral water should not be a problem. We had stayed in Hotel Buddha in Tawang. A bit costly but good hotel with good food.

Hey
Thank you for answering! I'm a bit late, sorry! I was wondering: can you also sleep in the monastery of Tawang, or is it just a place to visit? Are there reliable maps available of that region, on a scale we could use for the mountainbiking? Because on the maps I've seen it is very difficult to tell how big the roads are. For example: the road going through the villages of Seppa and Seijusa, is it possible to pass there with a car? Is it asphalt? Hope you can help me out I* |

Jorhat and Guwahati is 4/5 hours by car. The road to Tawang is busy and is stiff and scary. Have to be alert all the time.

I don't think that you can stay in Monastery. It is a place to visit. Monks are staying there. But tourists? -- I doubt. Govt. tourist lodge could be cheaper option. May be you will have to book it in advance as there will be rush in december because of Christmas vacation.

Hey transmania, It sounds as if we are planning the same thing more or less. I'm glad to hear about the smaller roads, that it's possible to go there. How are you going to find your way there, do you have a driver who knows, or do you have good maps?
sm thn: Thanks for the info on the monastery. We will be looking for a guesthouse then. I* |
