Smile Visit the tribes of South Orissa with me

Hi Guys, I am originally from Orissa and about seven to eight years back -- when I was in my college I read Norman Lewis's "A Goddess in the Stones". I revisited the book only last week and was so fascinated about the whole experience of taking the tour in the footsteps of the great traveler (perhaps the greatest in our times) Mr. Lewis. The whole experience (of re-reading the book) has culminated into a obsession, a urge to revisit the places and document the changes that took place in the ensuing years i.e. in the past twenty or so years.

All but for my good fortune, I am lucky to be from the town of Berhampur, the town through which Mr. Lewis passed in his discovery of tribes of south Orissa. Also recently I came across a thread by Jorge Reverter in which he mentions how he also took the same trip following the footsteps of Norma Lewis. But unfortunately for us he did not publish his travelogue. But interestingly he mentions how the person who accompanied Mr. Lewis in the tour -- met him at the Bhubaneswar airport!

If Mr. Reverter happens to read this then I request him: To publish his account of the Journey which he took some 6 to 7 years back. I think the urgency to document the fate to the tribes is more urgent then it was in 1990, because of the rapid developmental effort going on in those regions and also because of the escalation and proliferation of Naxalite activities, who are rapidly spreading there tentacles in these regions.

I am more interested in the pictorial depiction and the changes that has taken place in the way of living, their culture and traditions and the encroachment of the so called ‘modernization’ on these tribes; rather than writing reams of literature on these tribes, which I thing by now there plight has been, if not well documented, but at least has been well understood by now. If any one who has taken these tour previously wants to share any of their experiences with me are most welcome.

Cool

Hi Lewis'slosttribes,

I just came to know your thread today from a pm kindly sent by Sitapariyaga.

I have not published a travelogue about my journey in Orissa probably because I wrote a long book about it but unfortunately in spanish. I think I must translate into english but cannot do it by myself because my english is too short, just enough to answer a thread...

In my photo gallery mostly in the first pages you can have a look at several pics of the tribal hamlets/markets and people. Also in the photo gallery of my son "jorge jr" who came with me to Orissa you can see some other pictures, most are mines because at that time the espace available in the photo account was quite short.

If you want to meet the guide of Mr. Normal Lewis, he lives in Bhubaneshwar and works in Discover Tours and Travels at 463, Lewis Rd. his real name is Sarat Acharya. Have a look at their web page: www.orissadiscover.com

Keep in touch

Jorge
