Trip to Puri (from Kolkata)

Hi,

We are a group of 3 friends residing in Kolkata. We are planning a 2 day trip to Puri around 25th September (during Durga Puja Holidays). I have few queries :

1. How to reach Puri from Kolkata? There are no reservations available in trains. What are the good bus services?

2. Places to stay in Puri? Cheap hotels etc?

3. Places to see - What else is there apart from Jagannath temple and Beaches? Are there many beaches; which one is best?

4. Places near by - How far are Konark Temple and Chilka Lake? How to reach there? Any other places near by which are worth visiting?

Thanks,
Shishir

1) There are a lot of AC busses from Kolkata to Puri. Do a google.
2) There are several cheap hotels in Puri.
3) There are several places worth visit in Puri. Like Gundicha Temple, Daksinakali Temple, Loknath Temple, Gobardhana Math etc.
4) Konark is 35 Kms and Chilka (Satapada) is 50 Kms from Puri. There are several other excurssions like bhubaneswar (60 Kms), Balighai Beach (8 Kms), Brahmagiri & Baliharachandi (25 kms), Atri sulphur spring etc etc.

of course the trains will be full - its during the puja's... what were you thinking shishir ?
if you're a '85 year born - try travelling in the unreserved compartment [if the trains still have one].
you'll have to sit/stand/crouch - we've all done it, so dont make a fuss.

for the other info - log into the orissa threads shishir.
all the info you're looking for are given there.

aah - i see sriprakash has helped out with the bus.
just for an experience - go unreserved... with the aam janata.

Try Dhauli which is a day train......reach Bhubaneshwar at 2-2:30 and then take a connecting Puri Passenger or bus....there will be plenty of options.....reservations of Dhauli, a day train might not have started yet....take a look.

There is also HWH-BBSR Janshatabdi but in that case you may have to stay at BBSR for the night and go for Puri next morning.

Yes Dhauli and Janasatabdi are two good options. These two trains do not require any reservations.

You can spend 1 whole day in bhubaneswar. The places to visit are Lingaraj Temple,Rajarani Temple,Mukteshwar Temple,Khandagiri and Udayagiri Caves,Nandankanan and Dhauligiri.

From Bhubaneswar to Puri you will get buses in evry 20-30 mins.

For Puri to Konark and Puri0Satpada I will suggest to hire a cab.

Regards,
Sidhartha

You can avail " CHENNAI MAIL " from howrah to Cuttack. As chennai mail has an quota till cuttack which normally remains vacent. TILL CUTTACK ONLY ( S8 Coach). It reaches cuttack at 3.30 AM and you will get bus for PURI at 5.30 AM from cuttack only.( By Train bhubaneswar is 45 min from Cuttack)
I will not suggest to stay at BBS as hotels are expensives ( 3 will be charged min 650 Rs that too not decent).

Regarding Stay at puri avail HOLIDAY HOMES at puri those are cheap and good you have to select.

Those two trains are very very well patronised by commuters....and during Puja time, it will be safe to do a reservation, rather than to be sorry to stand all the way to Bhubaneshwar from Howrah.
