I have checked various websites and all I can find is a reference in early December on the official Orissa Government website stating that the Orissa State Goverment is thinking about opening up the tribal areas to foreign tourists.

Has this actually happened or is it just an idea that is being considered?

In the interests of providing correct information on this site can anyone confirm or deny this?

I am a little confused here… Ranger, can you explain yourself a little further please? As far as I know- foreigners can visit with a permit on an organised tour with a verified travel agent & guide.

Sorry to confuse you mountaingirl. The situation for many years has been that foreign tourists could only visit many restricted tribal areas as part of an organised tour group.

I think rangers post was saying that these restrictions had now been lifted.

I would like to know if this is true or not for members of the forum who might be going to Orissa on the basis of this information.

I am clear about this.

However I am still not sure if that was what Rangers meant?

BTW I did call the Orissa tourism guys and few travela gents who have repeated that the permit is still required. That is why I was wondering what Ranger meant.

The point of confusion lies somewhere else<A clearance was given by the state authority to tour opeartors to take tourist from abroad under their responsibility to visit their areas.Due to several reason(?)(ask for detail) these areas were protected from forgien visitors and if some travel agent is still charging on your innocence for asking for a permit, its a personal case of someone maybe. You can contact:Commissioner of Tourism,Heads of the Department,Bhuabneswar,Orissa,

Rangers

Your original post looked like a news item saying that something had changed for foreign tourists.

What exactly has changed?

Are permits no longer needed?

Can foreign tourists now enter the restricted tribal areas and
move around freely without using a travel agent?

I know from your website that you organise tours as well as running a hotel and camping place.

yes Mr.Alan.I do people to people tourism activity,Hardly any permit required to visit those area incase you want the goverment resthouses, you definitely need one.And in one such area(mayurbhanj) the tourist need to inform the police department only so that safety instructions can be passed onto him.And yes one forgiener can visit these areas(which were closed)without any permit or a travel agent.Isn't a good change for forgieners?I thought this info. may help your members.not confusion.
