Stray Snake

Orissa is since years a quite dangerous destination for the travelers. Naxalites fighting against landlords and police, Hindous arguing and sometimes burning churchs with people (converted christians) inside, the endemics floods devastating everything, etc....., but now even at the Indian Assembly in Orissa stray snakes are making politics more difficult.

I Intend to travel again to the tribal areas end of this year but traveling is getting more and more like a steeplechase in this part of the world.

Read that also.

Here's an article today that says more than 6500 people got bitten in Goa in the last 5 years. 25 died.

Jorge, the snake fear is genuine in Orissa it seems. I was given a snake anti-venom as soon as I turned up at the hospital in Bhubaneswar, thinking it was a spider or scorpion bite.

ananda2193,

25 died in five years are not much, that means five per year, even stray dogs are more dangerous in my country (I have few at home).

Jorge, you're right, 25 deaths in 5 years is not much proportionally. But perhaps that's because they're well stocked on anti-venom in Orissa and things were very different in the past, which could be where the fear is coming from.
