Greetings,
I will be spending a week alone in Orissa and I wonder if there are any specific safety concerns for women who are alone in this area? I have heard varried reports and hope that someone, especially women who have been there, could tell me about their experience. I will arrive Bhubaneswar and stay there for 2 nights, travel to Hirapur and Konarak for 3 days, and then spend three days in Puri before I head off to Kolkata to meet my husband. Thanks Tons, Karlie |

I never felt unsafe in Orissa, but then again, I'm not a woman
Seriously, I don't think Orissa is less safe than any other place in India. Use common sens and you'll be fine. Aah, Puri, ... Wonderful place. I planned to do a short stop over there but ended up staying a week. ![]() |

Normally Orissa is like any other state in India, only in the tribal areas there are quite often problems in some cases due to religions matters and in other sensitive areas the naxalites are moving around. Konarak, Puri, Hirapur, etc are for sure places to be and feel absolutely safe even if you are a solo woman traveller
All the best Jorge |

I traveled through Orissa as a solo female this past December and had no problems. Loved it, in fact, and really really want to go back there. I visited Bhubaneshwar, Konark, Puri and then took a long winding drive to Barkul on Chilika Lake and felt perfectly safe the whole time I was there. You have to be careful, just like any other place, and it comes with the usual hassles of travel in India but nothing out of the ordinary, at least not for me. I even rode the train from Barkul to Bhubaneshwar in 2nd class which was packed with young men who were incredibly helpful. They cleared a space for me to sit and helped me get my backpack in the luggage rack. It was quite a scene - wallahs everywhere, eunuchs, men sitting the luggage racks- and for only 16 rupees it was the best value for money on my whole India travels! Hopefully WonderWomanusa will see this and post as she has lots of experience traveling in Orissa as a solo female and can give you some good feedback. You may want to search for her posts as reading her posts is what convinced me to check out Orissa. Have fun!

In the towns, on the trains ... the people are warm and friendly and you don't need to worry... all exceptions have been mentioned.

I dont think safety should be a concern especially in places like Bhubaneshwar, Konark and Puri. These cities have a lot of tourists and the people in Orissa are generally well behaved.
Have a fun trip !!! |
