Apart from Hirakud, the Longest Dam in India, and a leaning temple of Siva there's nothing much to see in Sambalpur. If these two could be done while passing through Sambalpur, then I think there is no need to stay there.

We visited Sambalpur in 2007 and used it to take a view days rest and we needed to take the train from there.
It was fine but not worth to make a special trip for it. If you want to know more see the February part of our journal Mumbai-Dehli in three months |

There is a Wildlife Sanctuary named Ushakothi around 50 kms from Sambalpur. If you want to visit a Wildlife Sanctuary try Simlipal or Kanha in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh.

Neighbouring MP
What about the Chhatisgarh sandwiched between the two ? Or are you referring to some ancient database dating before 1st November 2000, when Chhatisgarh was a part of undivided MP.

@blackpool
The last line in my earlier post should have been nieghbouring Simlipal or Kanha in MP. Thanks to some IM'ers who are quick to point out mistakes in the posts. |

If you are really serious about visiting Sambalpur then try to visit Sambalpur during Dec-Jan. Thats the period when the Sambalpur Lok Mahotsav is organised. And keeping Sambalpur as your base, you can also see the Dhanu Yatra in Bargarh. (Which is the largest open air theatre). It is also hosted during Dec-Jan. (From 1st Jan to 11th Jan this year.)
I'am sure you will have a great time! Feel free to ask for more info. |
