rath yatra is usually in the middle of july. This year its on 16th july.
The jagannath temple has its own website.
http://ws.ori.nic.in/jagannath/

other than that you will get news from the local people in bengal and orissa.

please look into the sites of orissa tourism or jagannath temple. there is usually a webcast of last years celebration. there are lots of photos and descriptions too if you google rathyatra and puri.

as for first hand experience
crowd- enormous crowds from all over India. the hotels/guesthouses along badadanda (the main road for the rathyatra) gets booked months in advance just for the view from there balconies. (these hotels are neither sea facing nor very clean or posh)

weather- its smack inthe middle of the monsoons to expect a hot humid day with plenty of rains.

just a word of advice. This festival and the travel arrangenments you will have to make can get very chaotic. but you will enjoy it if you love large frenzied crowds and colours all around.

If you ask more specifically for some info maybe I can answer more "to the point".

Ok ... you asked about food....
As in any other tourist place/large town all kinds of food are available in Puri.... but best to stick to Indian..... Orissa cuisine has both veg and non veg(fish, chicken and mutton). But best to opt for a veg thali during the rathyatra... thats what all the pilgrims will be eating anyway.... Rice, dalma, mixed veg, papad and pickle will feel yummy after a long day of standing admidst jostling crowds....

Hi Tulaisntfar
How’s the planning going for your India trip?
I’m also heading to Puri for the Rath Yara, so we might meet up.
I’m actually organizing a group of travellers to get together for this. You might want to join us depending on your plans.
We’re looking at an 8 day trip that begins in Kolkata and heads down to Puri for the festival, including other highlights such as Konark, camping at Chilika Lake and a few excursions to rural villages of interest. One of us actually comes from Orissa, which helps facilitate things!
I’ll be happy to send you more information if you’re interested, just PM me.

Seats for Rath Yatra

I heard that people need to reserves seats on some of the rooftops in order to get a good view of the Rath Yatra. I'm wondering if anyone who will be there during this time knows about this? Or what you all are planning to do? Explore the festival from the ground?
I heard some seats can go from 1000rs and up. Just wondering what people are going to do. See you there!
