Puri...

I had been looking for info about Puri, couldn’t find any thread either. Even finding a train for Puri (any connection from Vishakhapatnam) was not easy.
I was wondering any of you have any idea about Puri??
Is it worth going in month of july??

OK. It looked to me like it does, quite a number of pages too, it's a popular destination, but having very little interest in Puri I didn't really follow up on it, sorry. You wouldn't be the first to ask "hey guys I've looked everywhere but...," hence my asking.

I'm sure there's some Puri nuts out here. btw Why did you post this under "cuisine and restaurants" at all? The train ride you were asking about looks a little specific, maybe check out the trains section where you can easily pick up the website for the Indian Railways.

Maybe Jaya was thinking about Chhole Puri/Aloo Puri/Amras Puri/Srikhand Puri/Puri Bhaaji/Sev Puri/ Dahi Batata Puri, etc. etc..... while posting !!

The thread is now moved to the right forum.

For information on Puri, try this link:
http://www.orissatourism.gov.in/puri.html

There are two trains to Puri direct from Vishakhapatnam, one of which is a temporary service, running only till July 12.

The regular train is the 8402 Okha-Puri weekly express, leaving Vizag at 04=25 on every Friday and reaching Puri at 13=30. The temporary train is the 8440 Tirupati-Puri weekly express and runs at the same time every Sunday.

Hi Jaya,

You can take a train from Vizag to Bhubaneshwar, which is about 1 and a half hours away from Puri by bus. Trains running between Vizag and Bhubaneshwar are more frequent. I took one in March that left Vizag at 14.00 and arrived in Bhubaneshwar at around 22.00.

Puri has a laid back feeling to it, but the beach is nothing special in my opinion. The area around the Lord Jagannath temple was the highlight for me in Puri. I'm a sucker for religious kitsch. The seafood is good, too.

Puri will probably be very quiet in July tourist-wise; the restaurant and hotel folk were saying that it was getting very quiet at the end of March already! I'm sure a lot of the places set up for non-Indian tourists will be closed in July... not that this will make any difference to you.

Hope you make it there,
Vasko

Local people (from Puri) and many other devotees believe that one goes to Puri only when Lord Jagannath wishes or to be more precise, calls one. According to the belief, if he does call, you will get there even if its last minute and there are few trains - if he does not, you will not be able to go there even if you prepare a year in advance.

So, if Lord Jagannath calls - any month of the year is good to go to Puri. Around July/August there should also be the most important festival of Orissa in Puri - the Rathyatra - not sure of the exact dates this year.

I love Puri and have been going there since the 70s -- my, it has changed a lot since then!

In general, it's pretty laid-back; people are nice and even the Kashmiri sales guys will engage you in conversation about your home and theirs -- much "softer" sell than they offer in other places.

As others said, the seafood is the best! Tuna (less than 6 hours out of the water) with garlic sauce and chips or mashed potatoes is a real treat!

The bazaar around the temple is terrific -- especially if you want to have clothing made. Tailoring is fast and cheap there, and there are beautiful hand-loomed ikat cottons for about $2/meter at the co-op.

Is there something specific you want to know about Puri?

I often wonder why inspite of the sure fire combination of beach, temples, budget eateries & hotels Puri & the eastern coast do'nt get much attention. Well after giving up Goa because I can't handle Goa anymore I have found quite a nice peaceful places on the east coast.
