That’s not how I expect it to look, I've heard it's a disappointment used widely by the fishermen.....

I've heard it's nicer a few Kms up the coast.

Sorry, this isn't much help, but I had been looking into going to Puri/Konark and I'd kept telling myself to forget the beach for anything other than walks.

Does any mainland Indian beach look like that?

No.
Beach front of Puri is a full of dirt.
However Beach at RANGERS looks like this.
99% beach is at www.beachrangers.multiply.com
just 12 Kms away from Puri en route Konark sun temple.

Like Steven says there are no beaches like that on mainland India. But it is true(or was true at least) that if you go few km north or south the beaches around Puri are very nice and quiet.

Hi
I'm part of the fixtures at Puri, having been visiting now for 17years. As you probably are now aware, this is by no shape or form any resemblence to Puri beach. The coastal area is in fact 'Flat as a pancake' In truth, Puri beach (town frontage ONLY )remains an open toilet for the large fishing community. However, having said this, Puri has some really Excellent unspoilt beaches/lagoons and rivers just on the outskirts of town. Get on your bike and explore. I agree with RANGERS he has a Great Setup. Laidback in a jungle location and a walk thro to a superb beach all to yourself. Away from all the usual supects you find on tourist beaches. The only note of caution; you need to be aware of the strong undercurrent along this coastline. The town itself is unique, in so much it represents Three distinct characters. First, the Jagannath Temple on the Grand road represents 'real India' with its throngs of pilgrims hustling and bustling as they go about their business.
Two; the Golden Sands ( totally misleading description) this is where you will find the Indian tourist ( mainly Bengali from West Bengal ) in their thousands on the the beach..having a Great Time! such a lot going on..it's facinating. In the early evening all the families come out dressed to the 'nines' and parade up and down the promenade.
Third: The Chakrathita Road also known as the CT.Road ( Cheating Tourist road ) This is where all the foreign tourist hangout. Plenty of restaurants to cater for every taste. This is the Puri beach, where everyone is selling you diamonds and pearls. Well, it's nice and quiet here, and most travellers who just came with the intention of staying for a couple of days, end up by staying for much longer than they intended..I guess that speaks volumes. The good news; you will find accom. and food excellent value compared to anywhere else. Cheap and Cheerful.
Finally,I should mention, just a short bike ride away is some great countryside to be explored, or for those lucky enough to have a motorbike Orissa is a fantastic state to discover.

Yah...that is not the picture of Puri beach at all.But puri is very common and also a very favourite place to visit.Though due to some unfortunate natural cause now this place is not like it was few years ago,bt still puri has its own beauty even now. To me one of da most attractive thing is the xcellent creative work with sand over the sea beach, the local artists do (have any of u ever seen this??)Specially for the bangali (dont know about other state)it is our favourite spot even after visiting there 5-10times !!
