PURI - a few tips
DO check out the wonderful Hotel Tanuja (ph 220 717). It's not in any of the guide books but it is great - I went to the LP-suggested ones (described as "tourist havens" etc) but was turned off by the bored-looking westerners lounging around watching TV at midday in the darkened common rooms. At Tanuja, ask for one of the cottages out the back - Indian toilet and cold water unfortunately but the cottage is cute with yellow shutters set in an amazingly lush garden - and there are two very friendly labradors who sit on your porch. A bargain at R150.
DON'T give a cent to the moped/motorbike hire place called Studio Hallo (on the main tourist strip). They ripped me off big-time when it came to petrol and were extremely rude. Hiring a moped is a great way to see Konark but get one from somewhere else.... please! DO have the tunafish set meal at the Garden Restaurant... WOW! And the staff there are great too and will run off to get you beer. A message from my toes: DO watch out for all the human poo on the tideline near the fishing village. |
