Puri 1 million people expected this Sunday 8 March 2009
Puri special event Sunday 8 March 2009
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Upcoming Sunday, a dip in the sea at Puri may benefit fast resolving of karma. A million people are expected to come. 800 fishermen reqruited from the fishersvillage, to work as lifeguards along the beach to forcome as many drownings as possible. 15.000 policemen are brought in. This event is special because it only happens once in 48 years, due to planet constellations. Last time same event here in Puri was in 1961. This afternoon they were preparing sweetwatertaps at the beach, so people can drink and don't have to faint. I was amazed to see how they made this drinking taps on the beach so close to the sea water. If I still be here on Sunday, and manage to shoot some video, I will upload it (in time) in the categorie: video. Cerio. |

it'll be an awesome mass of devotees to photograph
![]() all the best - and look forward to your photos joph... hopefully. them fisherfolks who double as lifeguards on a day to day basis in puri and gopalpur - are horrendously efficient. the bay of bengal along that strip is really rough - the waves come crashing down on you... its the rip tides one has to be aware of - they drag you out to sea. stay till sunday - and take a dip yourself... cant hurt, karma and all :brishti |

Taking part in religious ' dip in sea' event
Quote:
At 6 am. me and camera at beach in front of Marine Road. The crowd was like Holland on a hot summersday at Zandfoort beach. This time I was interviewed by ETV, which is a Indian national tv channel. Then a policeman sat down beside me and my bag, and suggested me to have my seabath, while he was watching after my stuff. Great. That and the bath was awesome and a releave. With camera I feel tourist. Bathing I felt happy, and part of all. Just the realisation that today is anyhow a; 'One time constellation of planets', makes the day special. Ofcourse everyday is special in that way, but rarely I realize that. Now thank you for your response Brishti, and your encouraging me to have bath between 10 thousands of Indians, which was a nice experience. Finally we are all from the same human species, isn't it? Joseph. |

I think the 1 million number is heavily overrated for a single day, but may be correct for the whole time of the ten-day-festival. It is perhaps 200'000, if it is that many at all for the first day. Since the people are constantly moving towards and from the carts, they are difficult to count. Mostly Orissan villagers. Very few devotees or sadhus visible. Unless you count everyone a devotee who shows some respect.
