Orissa... turtle power?
Anyone know anything about the Olive Ridley turtles that come ashore in Orissa - Puri, I think. I know February is a good time to see them but don't know if this is egg-laying time or hatching time. Any info on specific dates would also be great - can't miss baby turtles!
Cheers, An Orissa novice |

I googled "turtles in Orissa" and several articles came up. November-April is apparently their breeding and nesting period.
I was lucky enough to be on the beach in Mexico several years ago when a group was digging up hatchlings for a safe release project and they let me hold one. It was one of the highlights of the whole trip! |

quiet hard to pinpoint specific dates for these guys!
You could expect to see some nesting activity in Feb/Mar. Gahirmatha, Devi and Rushikulya the recognized nesting spots, all are not too far from Puri. You might be interested to check out Sanctuary Asia, India’s foremost wildlife conservation magazine or Orissa Marine Resources Conservation Consortium. |

Thanks for the replies. I am in Baripada and going to Chandipur this afternoon - just up the road from the Bhitarakanita marine reserve (closed to tourists). I have had no luck getting info out of Orissa Tourism but will add a new post once I find out any more info at the source. I did hear that the turtles hatched early this year and have been and gone already, but a new lot are expected at Rushkuliya for laying in the third week of March. Will let you know.

Sooo sad... this whole coast (Chandipur to Puri) is just littered with dead Olive Ridleys turtles. Once-were-beautiful, now they're stinking on the tideline and being eaten by dogs. Anyone know why? I guess it is the fishing nets. Near Konark, I counted almost 100 carcasses in half a kilometre. Such a shame for an endangered species.

Gahiramatha mouth have already attracted more than 50.000 mothers this week.
And about the dead turtles? More than fishing boats, its the weapon testing by military cause the choke of hearts of these turtles. This turtle truth is a complete eye wash. If the boats kill them..why the big ones and not a single small? My search for the truth still continues...am walking miles for that. |
