Ocean water
Would Puri area be a good spot for diving or snorkeling?
Or is this more of a beach hang out.It does look beautiful. I'm sure there are the low budget stays, right? thanks wm |

There are very low budget places there. I stayed for 37.50 sharing a room. The worst thing was the water as the ocean is used as the sewage system. Never saw anyone in the water besides fishermen. Next time I am going further out, Konarak and farther..

WM, to my best knowledge there's not a lot of diving or snorkeling to be done in mainland India, period. To the extent that it's taking off, it seems to be more to accommodate a wish than to present what's actually there. That is to say I've seen no indication that it can compare to many other places around the world. I'm sorry, and I can't help it. I'd like to be told otherwise, but so far I haven't. Be aware of dangerous undercurrents along most of India's coasts btw, I've written on it plenty a time before. Puri is one of many beaches that sees more drownings than it should. Other than that, to dabble in the shallows and enjoy some beach life is what makes it a beach resort I guess.

Mach makes a solid set of points not to be forgotten unless you want to be dragged in. There is a bit of diving in Goa despite the heavy mining. If you want to do diving try the Laccadives but take master card. The Andamans are a cheaper alternative if budget is a primary concern..

There are definitely low-budget places in Puri... quite a few of them. Just head for CT Road.

India's continental shelf drops away dangerously at several places on the East coast, which is good news for port developers and bad news for casual swimmers. Not too sure about why we have these terrible undercurrents, though. In some cases it's clearly because the beach is close to an estuary. Don't know about the others.

Be careful where you walk, I hear they like to use the beach as a public toilet!

There is no scope for diving and snorkelling in Puri beach .I am a resident of bhubaneswar and have personal experience. Also the beach near CT road is not clean and heavily litterred. Also be careful with the local fishermen of that area.
