Hi Cesarbe,

In what part of India would you like to travel? There are options for tribal travel in Andaman, Himachal and Northeast. Let me you know so I can suggest you something.

thanks!

i'm actually looking for a tour in the adivasi areas... (it looks like it's $70 a day for a 5 day trip if i go by my own... cheaper if there's a group, but we're not in high season).

the lp book says that there's a "cheap" option in bhubaneswar (travel club), so i don't know if it's better to do it there, or here in puri. i'm from peru, southamerica, and i'm really travelling budget.

any light is appreciated

Did anyone here go around the tribal areas of Orissa? I'm aware that you need permits to some places, but how do the locals really feel about tourists? I'm wondering especially about non-indian travellers. Is it OK to travel around those remote parts? There are obviously travel agents who deal with these trips, but are they accepted by the villagers themselves? I'm curious because I will do a lot more travelling to Orissa and I'm planning to do research in some tribal districts. I will of course contact people in Orissa when I'm there but just thought some of you might have any experiences or tips to share

Well, on a research to The Tribal hills of Orissa is better way to associate with the tribal culture than Travel agents.I know people like PETER from australia is up there with a rural biodiesel project. And one of the member EIAl is another IMER from USA who is working for Chilka lake.So knowing people around here also helps a lot.
and what about your project in tribal Orissa May I know?

Thanks for all information! My daughter was born in Orissa and I'm very interested in finding out more about her background in a broader perspective, the social issues of India as a whole but in particular of Orissa. My husband is also planning to make a documentary about the situation of women in Orissa and we will probably go there some time next year. Would love to hear more from all you people who've spent time there or know this part of India .

Thanks for the tip with the agency. I wrote them an email today, because I'm searching for travel agents in Bhubaneshwar.

tribal tours

Hi,

the recommended tour would be to Raigarha, Jeypore and near by region. You could contact SWOSTI TRAVELS. they are very good and organise various trip to suit ones' budget.

They are located in Bhubaneshwar and have hotels
called Swosti Plaza & Swosti in Bhubaneshwar. You could get in touch with them there.

If you can spare some more days then do visit Jagdalpur (bastar region). Then from Raipur you could take your flight to mumbai or Kolkata or Delhi for departure flight back home.

Enjoy take care

Long long back I was at Raigada and Jaipur studying in schools. That was in the years 1972-76.
My sister did some research work on tribes of that area. I saw some photographs of villages and tribes in her research paper. Now she is settled at Bhubaneswar.

At Raigada I was staying at a place called Khandha Sahi ( Tribes Lane )

There was a road crossing just before the Raigada station, standing there I use to count the number of wagons of the passing trains. Now there is a big flyover constructed crossing the railway tracks.

Now some time I pass through Raigada while traveling in train towards Tata or Rourkela.

have mixed feelings about this tribal tours thingy to be honest. it almost makes them feel like a zoo?...and when it comes people going 'educating', 'providing' them, i am not sure whether we are doing them any good.

its inevitable i think that tribals will enter the mainstream of the soceity leaving their traditional lifestyles.. as the tribal youth run into modern culture coexisting not far from them, do you think they will stick to their ways?.

.also as land pressures increase..our concrete spreads far in to the hinterland throwing their natural habitats out of sync...

guess this is a global problem but it is a bit depressing to hear about these tribal tours...

If you are really serious about travelling to tribal areas, then you should go to chhattisgarh. Bastar is one of the largest tribal belt in India. This near-perfect tribal land embodies a wild invitation into unexplored forests with waterfalls and wild animals, age-old temples, tribal dance and music. It is one of the most important eco-tourism destinations of the country

try these links.

You can also email at mail2ngo@myway.com(Voluntary organisation)

And to add bastar is very near to orissa.

I agree with you, GC ...but I guess if a tribe is truly isolated, living in truly traditional way, then these tours will not go near them. For those where they do, probably the tours have become an essential part of their economy.

There is one tribe ---Andamans, I think, certainly it is on an island--- where, if you turn up to have a look at them they just kill you... ... ...
