I am also very interested in the answers to your questions, uttamkolkata.

I will be in Kolkata in late January, then moving onto Bhubaneswar. I'd like to now if driving there is worth it versus taking the train.

Has anyone done the drive uttamkolkata has described?

Other threads about this question did not answer our questions very well.

Route : Cacutta to Puri

Hi
I have done the road trip from Cal to Puri on my Yamaha Enticer a few years back and the road at that time was fairly good so I guess it has improved..I hope! Anyway this is the direct route which I hope will be useful for your tour.

To get out of the city and onto the highway go via the 'New Bridge' (past the race course) and continue along until you come to a T-junction. NH6 TURN LEFT for Kharagpur / Midnapore.

Bagnan
Kolaghat
Panskura
Debra
KHARAGPUR
Chichra
Baharagora 10km from here take a LEFT Turn onto the NH5
Kuliana
BARIPADA
Betnoti
Basinga
BALASORE
Khantapara
Soro
BHADRAKH
CUTTACK
BHUBANESWAR
PIPLI
PURI

As regards stopping for lunch and snacks Your 'tummy' will dictate when you make your stops! but be assured there are a few places along the route the grab some snacks.

It may take upto 12 hrs? its about 500km

Have A Happy Journey Friends.

Car vs. Train

LET THE TRAIN TAKE THE STRAIN!

Take a day train and enjoy the scenery arr in Bhubaneswar just in time for lunch.

I would suggest you to take the road as described by Britishraj. The advantage is that you explore a few more places other than Puri, if you like. The road is in very good shape. If you prefer an early lunch, Balasore or Bhadrak would be the right place.

Puri by road

The journey from Kolkata to Puri was excellent except 70 kms from Balasore to Bhadrak, where there is no trace of road. The chilika tour was superb. But i want to inform all members, that never ever take food from chilika restaurant because they will cheat u like nothing. The place is unhygeinic & cut ur pocket like anything. It,s better to carry some dry foods & water instead of wasting money in there.
