Jagannath Mandir.. again

I'm visiting Puri soon and as I'm not Hindu I'm very clear I won't be allowed to enter. A friend of mine from Singapore, though, is half Chinese and half Indian (Tamil). I suppose you could say she was 'born Hindu' though she personally isn't practising. She is keen, though, to visit the Jagannath Mandir.

Now. Can any bright spark here help me... does this mean she will have a hard time entering, considering that 1. she's foreign 2. she's half Indian, though she's born Hindu??

It depends on How she looks, Being half Hindu won't matter much if she has (Prominent)chinese features. As crude as that sounds, that is the way it works in Puri temple. I hope that she makes it though.

wear a local saree

try to wear a local made saree and cover your head so much that it's hard to see your face and enter with a priest( you can hire from your hotel) ... you may able to enter. best of luck.

Whether she makes it or not depends on many scenarios, like the priests on duty at that time (if they are liberal or in a good mood) or how strictly they enforce thier policy.

These priests did not allow A former Indian prime minister as she was married to a Parsi. That was a high profile incident , I admit ,but That is an example. Your friend will never know for sure unless she tries to enter the temple. As she has a wish to go to the temple, why not take a chance?

Yes that's true.. I guess she should be firts contacting a local priest.. It would be embarrasing, if thye dont allow her. SPecially when you know there are restrictions.. Lets leave it for the pandas to decide..

Oh Well! Thanks everyone. Even if it doesn't work, there's always the Rath Yatra (we're there specifically for that). Would be a blast.

Panda is a derogatory word for Pandit. From what little I have heard of their conduct, they deserve an appellation even worse...

For some reasons I beleive that the restrictions to Jagannath mandir also another way to save travelers from expriencing another worst shock.
The caretakers of temple at present trying hard to maintain the cleanniness( its a dirty dirty place in the eating ground).
there is lot of verbal abuse, torture by so called Pandas.( Actually pandas are higher priests...the visible pandas who run here everything for money are a lower breed..called locally as DHULIAS.
For a person who understand their language is painful exprience of tolrating the foul language thrown to u and ur family if u dont pay and fear the gods.

So in my personal point..Its another dirty pool to avoid..and pray the god (if he is in the temple )..from far away on grand street.

AT and Rangers: I have heard a few horror stories to regarding thier conduct .The Hare krishna devotees (Mahaprabhu) who have never visited the place and only heard abt the Glody of god are in for a Huge surprise when they encounter such situations.

I ,for one , am glad that some of these devotees have not lost faith after such an experience.
