Entry to Jagannath Mandir, Puri

May non-Hindus enter any part of the Jagganath Temple?

We have been in many temples where non-Hindus may enter all but the sanctum sanctorum. Is that the case here too?

We have also been in temples where a non-Hindu, by accepting a tikka and donating, say, 500 rupees to the temple, may briefly be admitted. Does that happen here?

No such luck

Unless things have changed in the last couple of years. You can only view it outside from an upper floor of nearby buildings.

Cheers.

Regrettably, that's what we've heard.
Just checking; hoping, things might have changed.

I've been there few years ago trying almost everything to go in the compound but it seems is absolutely impossible. They say that even Lord Curzon the Viceroy of India was not allowed to go inside, and I've also heard that Indira Ghandi was neither allowed because her husband was not hindu ??????

I don't know about Lord Curzon, but it is true that Indira Gandhi, who was married to a Parsi, was not allowed into the Jagannath temple. She was also denied entry into the Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar. In fact, there is even a little platform outside and overlooking the Lingaraj temple that was specially built for her visit.

You cant enter the temple unless you are a Hindu ,i dont think the Rs 500 donation will work here.Unfortunately this temple bars entry to non hindus.I am sad about this issue as some of my best friends from the Hare krishna mission cant get entry to this temple as they were born abroad and not hindu by birth.

None shall pass!

At this time, in fact, NO one can go into the Puri Jagannath Temple.
Court bans all entry into Orissa temple (Nov 26)
Security was beefed up on Saturday at an Orissa temple after a court banned the entry of devotees following a public suit seeking protection for Dalits who plan to enter the shrine defying an ages-old ban.

In a related (?) story, I read a few months ago that a govt. commission had been appointed to "look into" the issue of barring foreigners from entry. This followed the temple's acceptance of a nearly $500,000 donation from a British woman...they were willing to take her money, but did not allow her to enter. I guess she was "polluted," but somehow her money wasn't.

Actually, the court barred entry for ANOTHER Jagannath temple - not the one in Puri, but rather the, "18th century Jagannath temple at Keradagarh village in the coastal district of Kendrapada..." (as per the link you provided)

This is the temple we were discussing in the other thread.

Thanks for careful reading, Seraph.

By the way, one of the largest Hindu temples in North America is the Sri Jagannath Mandir in Capshaw, Alabama (!). I wonder why it's there; must be a lot of Oriyas settled there.
