When I visited that triangle in late December there were plenty of mosquitos. It's swampy there. Orissa has malaria and chikungunya. It makes you happy you brought a mosquito net. Great place though--it reminded me more than any other place I visited of the India I had known as a child. It's not modern! Yes, it lacks infrastructure, and there are few Western tourists. We were the only Westerners at Konarak that day, and we wound up being photographed as much as the temple itself.

I stayed in Bhubaneshwar for a while, around 5 yrs back, it's(or was) a nice, calm, green place, lots and lots of small to medium ancient temples, some hidden in the most unexpected places, some tucked away between apartment buildings. The first supermarket was coming up just then, that was the latest buzz . I have fond memories of the place. Never tried to enter the temples though, I didn't feel like disturbing people. There is also a stupa and some caves to be visited on a hill nearby, but I didn't get to see them.

I didn't take any anti-malaria stuff, btw, except some doxycycline for around 2 weeks, then I stopped even that. I can't really say that there were more mosquitos than in other coastal areas I visited.

My following trip to Puri was disapointing (no temple visit and dull beach), but I enjoyed Konark, especially the sunrise on the beach and, of course, the sun temple itself.

But I am sure that Orissa has lots more to offer apart from its temples, for example the tribal areas, its colorful textiles and so on.

Regarding South Indian temples, from what I know, only the priests (not even other hindus/non-hindus)enter the innermost sanctum, no one eles. This is generally not true about the temples in the North where everyone gets in.

Its high time the govt passes some anti-discrimination laws that applies to temples that have tax exempt status. If the govt has a right to collect tax from an individual then that individual should have the right to access properties that the govt does not collect tax from. To those temples -- allow everyone equal access or start paying tax.

I was once refused even entry to a Chennai temple at all. That was their policy at that time. However, at Tirupiti I was allowed into the inner sanctum. The argument was the baby on my back was Hindu and had to be blessed and I was just the bearer. As the servant I had to come along. Admittedly, temples leave me cold but the personal warmth of that day is a lasting memory..

Question guys
is anyone allowed in the "inner sanctum" of any church or mosque?? are we allowed to go ahead and touch the image of christ or for that matter the holy grave or other sacred things???
Just a doubt coz i am unaware....

The hindu temples, yes i do agree that this is a high time that they should pass some law against this ugly acts, every one is equal in the eyes of god so why creat problems ...

I wouldn't be the best authority on Catholic Churches that have all this stuff (as a Baptist). However, touching is rarely appreciated in any place. The possibilities of damage and wear are obvious. The best example is the pilgrim that bit off the toe of a saint's body in Goa, please... Entry would be permitted. In fact you might be compelled to enter at a Baptist church. I suppose that freaks out some visitors. Baptists have very little imagery (avoiding tons of doctrinal issues here). Maybe Catholic Churches have a holy grave but I have no such knowledge. Some places like in Goa have relics and sepulchers that should be viewed respectfully not eaten..

<insert random Jesus joke with "eat me" as the punch line>

But seriously, in the middle east, Xianity is associated with cannibalism. & Xians are still referred as cannibals there.

During the crusades, the Xian army besieged a town/castle. Both sides ran out of food and soon the castle fell. Finding nothing to eat, cannibalism was resorted to.

This is circa 11 or 13th century.

aha....here's the link
