If you want solitude then it is Konark. If you want a bit of life stay in Puri but away from main beach. Look around Chakra Tirtha area.

thanks for your reply.

One more query, in terms of the natural beauty are the two similar, I have heard beaches in Puri are very long stretches, is it the same in Kornak. Also in Puri I know the hotels are right on the beach do you have a similar choice in Kornak as well?

Konark beach is a long strech too. If you walk towards left you will come to a place where Chandrabhaga river meets the sea.
Sorry I can not help you out with staying options on Konark beach as I had been there very very long time ago. There was nothing there in those days, we stayed with the fishermen near the Chandrabhaga river. The walk from Konark town to the beach was thru a casurina tree lined path.

Puri beach is filthy, pretty impressively so as the sewage system for the city. Good to walk by from a distance..

There were plans some years back for a resort on the beach at Konarak. Anyone know if it came to pass?
(shed a tear for the"Mahabization" of K if it's true)

If you want secluded beaches you can stay in Toshali Sands hotel and enjoy the beach which is about 2Km from the hotel. The beach towards Hotel Coco Hans Palms is also nice and serene. In konark you will find beaches mostly croweded with local fishermens.

Do you care for a resort - or an experience? I am on my way to Chandrabhaga - there is a guru - or just a very nice man the way I see it - who lives and has an ashram on the beach 3 km outside Konark - I was there years ago, and am just now on my way back there to see if paradise is still alive...

the puri beach is fine for bathing. However the crowds at the main beach in front of Puri Hotel are very avoidable. Try the beach around Mayfair/Panthanivas. Lesser Crowd. Konark beaches are more unspoilt. However, be careful there as the sea is a bit rough there at times, and sometimes there are small streches of quicksand. I have heard a number of incidents of swimming mishaps in Konark but rarely in Puri.

You can find out yourself. From Puri busstation in the centre of town,it is about 1 hour to Konark beach. It's easy to go up and down between Puri and Konark on the same day. ;-)

In Puri there are many hotels near the beach. The Puri seaside all to gether, is many kilometers long and covers different types of beach-atmospheres. There is a special backpackers area with cheap hotels in Puri. Konark tourist-centre is about 3 km from the beach around the Suntemple, but no problem, because the buses to Puri passes by the Konark beach (stop), all the time.
