Bhubeneshwar
Hi fellow India-lovers. I am going to Orissa in a few weeks. How easy is it to get train tickets from Calcutta? I wouldlike feedback and advice from people who have done it recently.I have learned not to trust Lonely Planet over many trips to India so please don't tell me to look up a guide book. This site is meant to be an alternative to a guide book. If we all follow guidebooks it destroys the destination anyway. Anyone got some ideas about good things to do in Orissa? That is things not advised by LP. Some things from personal experience. I have been to Kolkata several times but not recently. Thanks to anyone who takes the trouble to reply, regards from Jessy

Not personal experience but a guy I know with nearly 30 years of travel under his belt really recommended Chilka Lake National Park.
He reckoned it was his favourite National park and he's been to a lot of parks. It's around 130 KMs from Bhubeneshwar, October through until March is the best time to visit and accomodation is available!! Here's a link Chilka Lake |

I'd also take a look at the guesthouse run by member Rangers, it's on the beach somewhere near to Puri I think. I saw a picture of it at some point and it looked like a comfy place to spend some time!!

Any particular reason why Orissa is being discussed in the Goa section of IM.

Hi Jessy,
it´s easy to get a train ticket usually the same day of departure, if there´s no religious festival going on. I went in february on the overnight train to Puri (just a bit further than Bhubaneshwar), which leaves Kolkata around 10 PM. Further info at the indian railways site. Have fun, Steve P.S. Does anyone remember a fisherman called Jagu who lived in the fishermens village in Puri and walked along the beach to ask tourists to come and eat fish at his house, to make a bit of a living?
