Berhampur?

Hi IM-ers,

I'm travelling from Bangalore to Calcutta at the end of April and to break up the trip into two slightly more manageable chunks I have booked the first leg to Berhampur, then Berhampur to Calcutta. I have two nights between trains so I'm looking for some things I can do in between.

I booked to Berhampur mostly because the train timings worked out better than stopping in Bhubaneswar. Having done a pretty thorough search on the net, I haven't been able to find much about Berhampur other than a Wikipedia page and an official tourism site. Has anyone been there? What's the city like and what can I do either in the city or nearby? I know it's mostly just a tourist hub and that Gopalpur-on-Sea is nearby (which seems to get pretty mixed reviews) but that's about it.

Will there be enough for me to do? Or should I try to change my train tickets to stop somewhere more interesting? (I'm confirmed for the first leg and RLWL7 for the second, will likely be much further down the waitlist if I rebook.)

Hope I've posted this in the right section and sorry it's so long!

Berhampur hasn't much for tourists, or I didn't notice anything.

But Gopalpur-on-Sea is really nice, cheap and relaxed, it gets loads of Bengalis at weekends and holidays.

Hi! Besides Gopalpur, from Berhampur you should be able to reach Taptapani,a place in the middle of nowhere with a hot spring. I've been there long time ago,but if my memory doesn't fail me I took a bus from Berhampur. Among hills of bamboo forest there was(I believe it's still there)a very good government hotel, with 2 rooms that were more like flats, with several rooms,Tv,and above all a kind of private hot water tub,2x2 meters or so,in which the staff would pump the hot water once a day when you wanted it. And in those times it was really cheap, for what you got.

Check out Chilika

Hi,
You consider going to chilika lake. It is the largest salt-water lake in India.

You could consider a boat ride. If you are lucky you might dolphins. Check out the sea-food cusine in chilika. There is a small eatery called chilika dhaba. The sea-food is very good there. The place to ask for is 'Barkul' in chilika for this eatery..

You could google chilika for more info.

Distance would be less than 2 hours at a maximum. There is a train to a station called Balugaon. The best option is to hire a car. makes the ride comfortable.

warning: It is quite warm/ HOT in Orissa now. That might be a bottleneck.

Btw, if you're into sarees and stuff, berhampur is known as the silk capital of Orissa.

The town though is quite small. Very small laidback place...

Berhampur is one of the most horrible cities I have ever seen. Don't stay there, go to Gopalpur or few kilometres north to Aryapalli beach. Taptapani is just a curious place but nothing else, the bath tube a bit dirty.

There is another place called Daringbari that can be accessed from Berhampore - it's the only hill station in Orissa. But please check the political situation there.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys, they've given me some options to think about! Looks like I'll be able to entertain myself for two days at any rate.

Smile Don't forget to check-in at Queens Villa at Gopalpur.

I agree Berhampur dosen't have much to offer in terms of tourist attraction. But there are some really good Guesthouses in Gopalpur such as the Queens Villa. They don't do much advertisement, but you
if you plan to stay at gopalpur want a stay which is really freindly and comfertable at an affordable cost then you should try the Queens Villa. The peroson who runs the place can be Contacted at: 09437203561. Cheers!
