Village HomeStay in Sankri, Uttaranchal
FOr those interested in village homestays in the mountains of Uttaranchal for a fortnight or a month, Ive found a cool spot in Sakri Village (the starting point for Har Ki Dun Trek).
Its a 2 room house made of Deodar Wood (ive seen just 1 of the rooms). Its got a double bed with complete wooden interiors, strong scent of the wood and 2 little windows. The Balcony faces a valley with farms(unfortunately there is another rest house blocking some of the view). I am unable to recollect the name of this village but its just a 5 minute walk from sakri village. Have a few pics of the place. This place may have frequent power failures but the weathers always pleasant. Dont know what the rates are. Anybody interested can ask for Mr. Bachan Singh Rathore (the hospitable owner of this place) in Sakri Village. But he usually travels and may not be available. Ive got his mobile number and can message it to folks interested in knowing more about this place (got a couple of pics too).

Sounds lovely. Price?
Is it a good area for random walks in the hills?

hi
sorry about the late reply. Amm still traveling so dont have continuous access to the net.
Anyways I am not sure what he charges but i am guessing it is expensive since he says he primarily tries to get foreign toutists who wish to stay there for a month or so and he finds them less whimsical. I just stayed there for about 4 or 5 hours with a delicious dinner and he didnt charge me since we knew each other since a week before.
Walks in the hills are quite safe. There may be some wildlife around there and the villagers have stories of when they encountered bears and leopards or of leopards that attacked man in their vicinity. However ive spent 2 nights there and have walked through pitch darkness and found no danger. In general not much threat from wildlife or social misfits around that area. This place is a starting point for treks to Har Ki Dun and Ruinsara. They are quite high and about 30-35 kms away, this is where u would find eaten up remains of cattle, pug marks, dung etc. But yet its quite safe to walk around before sunset. (currently, sunrise is 5am and sunset 8pm)
Anyways i can send u the pics once i get home (am still traveling) perhaps next week. PM me if anything.
Cheers

Village Home Stay
It is indeed an excellent concept.Village stay should be encouraged to get the real feel of the place. It might be a good idea to post a full feature on the Sakri House in Uttaranchal.

From Sankri you can do winter trek to Kedarkantha peak. Its a beautiful trek starts in middle of dense pine trees and later on runs in middle of oaks & walnut trees. If you are lucky then you get the chance to trek in soft snow. I went in December end and we have to camp on snow at Kedarkantha base for one night.
Around Sankri, you can go for nature trails and people are quite friendly & will guide you.

Interested in homestays
Hi,
Your post is from 3 years ago but I hope you still have those pics and contact number for this place. I´d be very grateful for the info as I´m planning on visiting Garhwal this May.
I´ve been a few times to HP but am looking for some new valleys to explore, with some nice walks and altitude around 2000m.
I like to stay at small friendly family-run GHs or homestays, to help the local economy/community and encourage them to take care of the environment. But I travel on a real budget so it must be cheap!
If you have more tips for quiet, cheap homestays please advise.
Thanks so much

Sorry Four321zero!
Woops! I didn´t scroll down from the first post and now I´ve seen the email and tel. contacts further down.
But if you have any other tips.......?
My favourite place to stay is Shringi Vatika at Ghiyagi in Banjar Valley, if that gives you, or others, an idea of the kind of hidden paradises I enjoy!
