travel to mizoram

[quote=torryquine]How about Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur? Has anyone on this forum been to any of these states?

If you have, what were they like? Are they worth a visit?[/

mizoram is one place which is least visited by foreigners /tourists . its basically because of the restrictions in getting permits.otherwise its the most peaceful state in the northeast ......

I do not know whether foreigners are allowed but if you can get a permit, then the seven sister states of North East India are highly recommended. Although each state has its own entry requirements, some are common to all states. Indians need an Inner Line permit and foreigners need a Restricted Area Permit, valid for ten days for a group of not less than four persons, available at Indian Missions abroad as well as at the foreigners registration offices in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata. Some states like Arunachal levy a US$50 fee per head and you need to use the services of a local tour operator. Arunachal qualifies as one of the most remote places in India.

I previously had no idea, but after reading these posts I did a little research and the Seven Sister States are indeed very interesting, if I had the time this would be my second choice after Kashmir, maybe I'll even make time, we'll see

Here's some good links

PS: as always when something sounds too good, there are some problems and dangers associated with the areas, the good with the bad kind of deal

if u do plan to come right upto the corner most of the north east ,i.e, mizoram which is sandwiched by bangladesh and burma ,do feel free to write to me for more info.eg,getting permits ,etc, this is a place which is hardly visited by tourists....a totally different place compared to other parts of india..tradition and culture -wise.

Nov 7th or so I will probably be up in Kashmir, since that's too late to ride the Himilayas back through Nepal, what do you think about dropping south a little bit and riding the foothills around?

the best time to visit north east is between october and april..so nov is a good time.maybe you can head eastwards starting from darjeeling .sikkim.assam.meghalaya..Restr icted Area Permits(RAP) is not required in these areas...so u can plan ahead without worries for permits ..do you plan to go right upto the states in the east-end ?

Thank you mahimi, I think the Seven Sister States will be a good place for me

Mecasa, among the seven sisters u need to obtain RAPs for entry to Arunachal, nagaland, manipur&miz oram and you need to be in a group of 4 for a permit.you also should check on present situations before really entering states specially like manipur and nagaland.Travelling by road to states like Tripura may not work out if you don't have much time as one has to travel in convoys(under security cover) and it can take pretty long. I'm not sure about the other states but for obtaining an RAP for my home state its alot easier and simplier if its applied for inside the state than through the Central gov't....for Arunachal permit,I understand it can be obtained through travel agents ..If you are travelling eastwards from Kashmir,Guwahati(ASSAM) would be the best base to travel to the seven sisters

This makes me very sad because the Seven Sisters was to be the third and final leg of my journey. I felt the different topography would be a welcome respite after a couple of months of solid mountains, wooded forests would have a mellowing effect on me and the differences in the cultures of the Seven states cultures from he Himilayan tribes and from mainland India would be an adventure unto itself.

I travel alone and don't believe I would be happy with a convoy of people, this really makes me sad, who causes all the danger if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you for the good information

Maybe I read this wrong and it's not danger, maybe they just don't want us there?

There are a variety of terrorist groups in the North East, who cause problems in most of the states. There are also insurgent groups from Bangladesh who hide out on the Indian side of the borders. Tripura is particularly vulnerable, being almost "surrounded" by Bangladesh. This website from Guwahati will give you some idea

http://www.northeasttribune.com/

We did see evidence of terrorist activity including the aftermath of a murder, so there's no point in pretending that it isn't there. Security in the region is fairly heavy and very noticable. There are road-blocks all the way up the Highway 37.

All that said, Assam and Meghalya are fine to travel in and we'd certainly go back. Meghalya has a matriarchal society which you may find quite refreshing? The further north-east you get in Assam, the more Thai the influence becomes. They're really very interesting and unique places and quite undeveloped as tourism goes.

I've been studuing up on the Seven Sister States. I believe this to be one of the most interesting and beautiful parts of India. The only hard part is getting in and out with all your possessions and your life :-(

But I'm still interested

I like what Karma Queen said about the streets in varanasi. In india the remote place can also be your own back yard .Just go 50 Km outside the city and you will find your self all alone . After 9 pm its deserted .uttarkashi gharwal is awesome so is a few beaches in maharashrta all it take is some soul searching
