Textile factory tour?

Are there any textile factory tours available in India? How about around Bangalore, Delhi, Varanasi, or Kerala?

Factories? What did you have in mind?

I found it most interesting, in Gujerat and in Orissa, to go to the homes or workshops of weavers and watch them producing ikat textiles or bhandini (tie-dye) or mirror work.

In Varnasi and in Kanchipuram, you can watch folks weave silk sarees; the pressure to buy is considerable.

I wonder if THIS (http://www.chandericluster.org/pehal...htaq/index.htm) is what "midwestjules" had in mind when asking about "factories."

The Kullu valley in Himachal Pradesh is famous for its brightly coloured shawls with distinctive patterns.

These are mostly woven on hand made looms and you can watch them being made in people's houses in the valley's villages. My wife usually buys one each time we go there and also scarves for presents. Great mountain scenery too!

Kulu shawls are very stylish in Delhi right now; on post-New Year shopping sprees, I saw many women wearing them.

And though I didn't get to Kulu to buy mine, the HP Emporium in Delhi has a good selection, as does the Central Cottage Industries Emporium.

BHUTTICO

The Kullu Shawl Weavers have an association called BHUTTICO. Their factory is located at Bhuntar, just outside Kullu town, at the confluence of the Beas and Parvati.

If you take HPTDC's day tour of Manikaran, a visit to the factory is included.
