Peace and quiet
Hi everyone,
I want to spend a week or so in the mountains from July 21. Can anyone suggest a place that is small and quiet and pretty and has a "local" feel about it, rather than being a "tourist town"? I was in Kasauli last week and really enjoyed that but I would like to try something new. People have suggested Dalhousie. Would also appreciate hotel/guest house recommendations (with restaurant/food delivery available). A place that's on a direct bus route from Delhi would be good! Thank you! |

I fear my friend that you will have to amend you itinerary a little. If there are busses, guest houses , restaurants, food delivery there then it will almost certainly be a tourist haunt.
I have not been there, but, a friend recommends some villages close to the Darjeeling area, perhaps someone on site can clarify. ~ Try, try and try again, then give up, it's not worth all the hastle~ Last edited by Barryjames : Jul 14th, 2007 at 16:20. Reason: give ip? |

Ha ha. Good point! Darjeeling is further than I wanted to go but if anyone can recommend places in HP and Uttaranchal that would be great. A two-bus/bus-taxi journey and a small hotel with food available and no telly will do me. Thanks Barryjames.

I would say don't go to Dhalhousie as it is touristy to the core, at least to me it feels that way. I would say try Shringi Vatika near Sojha. It is a house that takes in tourists in a very small village and the contact details are-
The contact details of Shringi Vatika Manohar Lal Phone: 01903 227029 Shringi Vatika Shringpur Ghiyagi P.O. Jibhi Teh. Banjar Distt. Kullu HP My account of it can be found here and here. |

Ranikhet is very nice
I spent a week in Ranikhet in early April this year and it was very relaxing. We stayed at the Chevron Rosemount, which is a couple miles from the market/bazaar--easily walkable. Other guests were from Delhi, coming up for the weekend, birders, and a few other foreigners like me and my mom, just staying a couple of days. We walked every day from the hotel, and had great service and good food there. It was quiet--we finally could get a good night's sleep! We'd just been in Nainital and had an awful time trying to sleep. The market in Ranikhet is crowded, but not too bad. The town definitely has a local feel to it--it's an army town, so is clean and orderly for the most part. Lots of tall trees and you are surrounded by forest. I'm getting ready to post reviews and pics from our trip here on indiamike, so check back for more info.
