i arrived in india in 1977 with enough money to last me 5 months, then survived by doing and selling portrait sketches for a year and a half. in those days the law was slacker but today i would worry about getting evicted for working in india.
i also embroidered backpacks i made from colourful fabrics and sold them to travellers. i survived........

Enough local competition here, too, specially in the brain dead dept.

Well that's all the sensible stuff out of the way , and if you do go under the conditions of no cash or severely limited finance ,you might have a hard time ,but i have noticed in the human condition the ability to survive and learn .Many people have started out on journeys with none or very little cash ,in the UK we have a term "winging it " witch seems to fit ,and guess what ,it can work At least you will be starting on firm ground ,the bottom of the ladder .Have fun and good luck

Something about the OPs post made me think of this post which generated ALOT of anger & a tiny bit of support...remember "Mr. Barter" (who never actually was an IMer, it was just a news story). Oh, & he didn't get past France Not exactly the same--this sounds more like "Fly to India without money".

Briton plans to walk to India without money --- Now Off

My opinion...don't go unless you have enough money to support yourself minimally--nothing more disgusting than a beggar/tourist--and there are plenty of them already, who in Goa frequently turn to crime (& have for 40 years--even when India was so cheap you could live on 50 rps a day).

And you must have a way to get money to leave!! Your embassy will not help you get home if you run out of options. They would probably help you contact your family but you'd have to pay for your own transport home.

Oops, feeling anger oozing out....

Save some money, then Go to India, go to an Ashram, live cheap, have a great experience.

Why the anger ? many people have started out on a trip like that and have had a good experience . There's that term "character building" the op might decide that it's a silly thing to do and call it off .his decision ?

Just my personal experiences which informs most peoples opinions ...never could tolerate the western junkies & losers that were begging on the streets of Delhi & elsewhere. The travelers who stayed too long and were barely existing and not having a character building experience...in MY opinion. I feel the same about them right here in my hometown.

And I never met anyone who successfully navigated India or elsewhere who decided that winging it would work. I think that's a myth and nothing I've read by anyone who claims to have done it & had a character building experience has convinced me. Even Kalbarri had enough to live for 5 months! before her talent & enteprenurial skills took over (well done!).

I believe it's naive & selfish to expect other people to take care of you--a traveler who had the ability to gather the funds to get yourself far from home but then left the rest to chance-- particularly in a country with so many people struggling to get by day by day.

I am predisposed to not winging it. The people that are so inclined ultimately depend on the reliable types like me to help them out of a bad situation. No way, I worked too hard to save money to finance all my outstanding character-building travel experiences!

If you want to be a selfish baby, look for Freenote, not me to bail you out

I have been in one ashram near Haridwar, it is called Shantikunj. They don't charge anything for rooms. One can give donation as much as he can. There are quite good conditions, nice rooms.
