Bhuj and Dwarka qualify as "small enough to walk around." Or is Gujerat too far south for you?

Maheshwar - Madhya-Pradesh, between Mandu and Omkareshwar, love the town - there is a fort, temples, ghats and the place itself is charming with a pleasant market area.

JhalaraPatan in the South East of Rajasthan, together with the nearby Jhalawar are a good option.

I might suggest the Dwarahat area of Uttarakhand...as my ID suggests, I am a bit biased. The area is off the beaten path, nice places to stay, temples to visit, beautiful nature, peacefulness, much to see and do...

Yes, and try also very nearby, Naya Nangal, at the foothills of the mountains. It is near a resevoir, very sweet small town. Can be reached by rail and walk to anything. Especially see Bhipor Sahib, Gurudwara, A Sikh Temple. It overlooks the lower part of the lake. Mountains and lake, majestic views. Pure. Serene. |

Not so far from Orchha is Chanderi.
It is a small town and a few tourist visit it. In the town there are a lot of monuments and it is famous for the weavers. In the environment are caves with rock-paintings, deserted temples in Khajuraho style and a lot of other sights. We explored it all with a local guide and had a great time. The nearest railhead is Lalitpur on the Jhansi-Bhopal line. |

Pachmarhi in Madhhya Pradesh is very nice hill station. It is a very small and peaceful town. Can be visited anytime except new year when there is some festival.
