Mumbai to Barmer
Could you tell me the best way to get to Barmer via train from Mumbai? I was going to go to Bundi this July , but Kiradu sounds great.

I have done a full post on trains to/from Barmer from Mumbai (Bandra), Delhi, Jaipur & Jodhpur (including Luni Jn.)
Click here for the post. I suggest train 4846/4848 from bandra. 2A = Rs 1373 3A = Rs 877 SL = Rs 322 Then try to connect with train 4059A at Luni Jn. A tight connection, but if your train from Mumbai is late you can still connect with Train 1JB to Barmer. |

my suggestion would be to reach jodhpur / jaipur / ahmedabad
and take a bus to Barmer. But Steven, you are wow as usual! By bus from Jodhpur - 4-5 hrs from ahmedabad - 8-10hrs from Jaipur - 8-10 hrs Or you could get a local train from these places too. Barmer has a single gauge(??) track, or whatever, so not too many long distance trains go there as far as I know. If you can afford it, the best option is to hire a car from Jodhpur, because, even after you reach Barmer, there is no certain public transport that will actually take you to Kiradu. There will be a govt. bus from Barmer but i am not sure if it plies once a day or once a week! So you could keep the car for a night or two, see kiradu, and return in the same car. Will try to get bus details for the barmer - kiradu route. Last edited by natasha chanda acharya : Apr 27th, 2005 at 11:53. |

The line to Barmer has recently been converted to Broad Gauge, you can even get a direct train from Delhi.
Sadly, I don't think the track upgrade had anything to do with the people of Barmer, all tracks heading towards the pakistan border have been converted and other new Broad Gauge tracks are being built. It's hard to get tanks to the border, even harder if you have to change trains at some point. |

I found out!
Things have moved ahead since I last visited the place. There are buses everyday, it seems, more than one in a day to the village near Kiradu. You have to take the local bus from Barmer to Ramsar and get off at the stop called "kiradu phatak." From there you have to trek approximately 2 Km to the ruins. Otherwise, you can hire a vehicle from Barmer, plenty of hire vehicles available, and move at your own pace. ![]() Coupled with Steven's Train schedules, now you have a complete travel solution to Kiradu. ![]() |
