Most beautiful beach in India

Hi everybody,
me and a mate are planning to go to India in July, August. Who knows beautiful beach spots on the mainland or some islands (and the best way to go there). Thanks for your answers!

Talking My favourite beaches

Hi

My favourite beach destinations in India are as follows..
1. Karwar
2. Andamans
3. Allepy - the beach and the backwaters
3. Pondicherry

I have been to all the places above, and i have put travelogues here on IM. U can read them, and take a decision.

Goa is also good, but, is touristy.

I have not been to other beach destinations in India, and hence can't comment.

I hope u will find the above travelogues useful.

Hi RedSwordfish, welcome to Indiamike.

July and August are not really good months for beaches in India if you are seeking the usual beach resort activities like swimming, sunning, socializing etc -- monsoon conditions on the the west coast (including the mentioned places like Karwar, Alleppey, Goa and unmentioned Kerala beaches like Varkala) make the water unswimmable, the weather generally lousey, and there will be few tourists around. The Andamans, also mentioned, is recovering from the Tsunami and will also be in Monsoon mode at this time -- even the ships to Pt. Blair don't take passengers at this time of year.

A partial exception on the West coast might be the island of Diu (attached to southern part of Gujurat by causeway) ... the 'search' function should bring up a couple of threads on Diu during the monsoon season.

From the weather charts, the south-eastern coastal areas might be more promising, but I have no experience myself -- perhaps the Vizag fans can comment, specifically, on the question of whether July and August weather is OK for a beach vacation in places like Vizag, Mamallapuram, Pondicherry, etc

Everybody has a different opinion about going to India in July/August. This is the only season I have time to travel. So can you tell me where is the best choice to go in the monsoon-time? Is the weather in Goa also lousy? I'm very confused...

cheers

India is a large country and there are lots of good places to visit during the July-August period that you have available. My comments were only on beaches during the monsoon -- probably an interesting time to visit, but what I was getting at is that if you are counting on the 'normal' sort of beach holiday, you will probably be disappointed. For example, Goa gets around 900mm of rain during July and the beaches generally unswimmable.

There are a few beach pictures from Goa taken during the monsoon by member Will Marks. These may give you an idea of what I mean.

edit: here's a link to a thread that might be of interest -- particularly Indiawise's comments on Diu and Goa.

Hey what is wrong about visiitng beaches in monsoon? I love a cloudy weather at a beach. Check the links I had posted earlier.

Eastern coast is also in the monsoon period in July and August. August is more likely to be 'safer' from monsoonal rains. July...well... cyclones! Avoid!

Probably July and August are not the best months to stay there, but my favourite beach in India is Palolem in South Goa.

re Lakshadweep: Last I heard, the only way non-Indians could visit the islands was with a package tour with very limited choice of destinations. Although I haven't visited them, the islands appear to be spectacularly beautiful and unspoiled. Since these islands are off the west coast, monsoon conditions will prevail in the July-August period and I doubt any tours will be operating at this time.

Here is a link to some information on the Lakshadweeps:
