Looking for somewhere nice in Himalayas
Darjeeling was certainly our favourite. Clean, no plastic allowed!! Lots of different markets. Fab temples, tibetan refugee temples. Go to Ghoom on the toy train from Darjeeling. Its far easier than going to Darjeeling on toy train all the way up.
Get a sleeper class from Delhi, quite cheap, and come back via Varanasi. There was a lovely hotel we stayed in in Darjeeling. If you get up at 5am in the morning before the clouds descend you can see the range of the himalayan mountains including the next biggest to Everest, Everest is just round the corner up Tiger Hill. It cost us 750INR with breakfast in bed! Ask for the top room, no lifts but the view is the best. You wake up to the mountains on both sides of the large windows. The hotel is called www.shangri-la-regency.com Do give the chap who cleans the toilets a tip.He is frightened to speak I think as he is classified as an untouchable - ahrd to believe in this day and age even in India.OH AND ALSO go and ask for Mike in the two storey pub near the clock. He is full of knowledge of the area. All the way up by cab to Darjeeling from train was fab. The scenery got greener and greener and wasnt too wet during the monsoons. Incredible tea gardens -white tea. Best for buying real siLK pAShminas and tibetan jewellery. Eat in the poshest restaurant, cant remember its name, just ask for the best its on the same road as most of the money exchange banks. The food was a work of art, nouveau cuisine in Indian form and cost about £3.00 for three of us for a three course meal. Amazing place. We would love a house here. There is also a hidden part of Darjeeling we didnt find until the last day. Straight on from the clock tower and upwards towrds the square with an English Church, horses, stalls, food places. THE LOT is here. |
